It is part of the Similipal-Kuldiha-Hadgarh Elephant Reserve popularly known as Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve, which includes three protected areas — Similipal Tiger Reserve (2750.00 km2), Hadgarh Wildlife Sanctuary (191.06 km2) and Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary (272.75 km2)). Simlipal National Park derives its name from the abundance of semul (red silk cotton trees) that bloom abundantly here. The park has a protected area of 845.70 square kilometres (326.53 sq mi) and has some beautiful waterfalls like Joranda and Barehipani. Besides Simlipal is famous for gaurs (Indian bison), chausingha, as well as an orchidarium. One can enter Similipal through Pithabata (22 kilometres (14 mi) from Baripada) and 98 km via Jashipur. Entry permits can be obtained from the Range Officer, Pithabata check gate upon paying prescribed fees. Day visitors can enter between 6 AM and 12 noon and visitors with reservation between 6 AM and 9 AM. Similipal National Park is open from 1 October to 15 June.

​Tucked deep inside the biosphere of Similipal National Park in Mayurbhanj, this majestic giant originates from the Budhabalanga River as it gushes over the Meghasani peaks of the Eastern Ghats.

​English: Barehipani is a two-tiered waterfall plunging down from a massive height of 399 meters (1,309 feet)! The first major drop itself is a staggering 259 meters. The sheer structural layout creates a localized mist zone, heavily fueling the surrounding microclimate and lush, rich biodiversity.

​How to Reach: Entry is via Jashipur (approx. 45 km away) or Pithabata gates. Baripada is the nearest major town.
​Best Time to Visit: November to June. (The park is closed during prime monsoon months for conservation and heavy safety risks).
​Stay: You can book beautiful eco-tourism night stays at the Barehipani Nature Camp or Jamuani/Kumari camps via the Odisha Tourism portal.

Deep within the core of Similipal, nature has carved two of its most magnificent masterpieces: the Joranda and Barehipani waterfalls. Geologically, these aren't just scenic spots; they are remnants of a Precambrian landscape, dating back over 2 billion years.

Unlike the younger ranges, the Similipal Massif is a unique structural basin composed of ancient quartzite and metabasalt. The sheer vertical drops of these falls are the result of tectonic uplift and the relentless erosive power of the Budhabalanga River system. Joranda stands as a powerful single-drop plunge of 150m, while Barehipani is a grand, two-tiered cascade plummeting 399m from the heights of the Meghasani peak. These waterfalls act as the lifeblood of the reserve, creating rare micro-climates that support over 90 species of endemic orchids and diverse wildlife.
