Ranade Library, IISc

Ranade Library, IISc Ranade Library is one of the biggest club in IISc with more than 8000 books. Starting with the quotation by C.S.

Lewis, Literary works are portrayals of the thinking patterns and social norms prevalent in society. They are a depiction of the different facets of common man's life. Classical literary works serve as a food for thought and a tonic for imagination and creativity. Exposing an individual to good literary works, is equivalent to providing him/her with the finest of educational opportunities. On the

other hand, the lack of exposure to classic literary works is equal to depriving an individual from an opportunity to grow as an individual. Reading and being given the keys to the literature world prepares individuals from an early age to discover the true importance of literature: being able to comprehend and understand situations from many perspectives. Ranade Library is serving this purpose quite successfully. It is one of the biggest club in IISc with more than 8000 books. Library archive comprises of books from different languages like English, Hindi, Bengali, Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam, Tamil, Oriya, Telugu, Sanskrit, Urdu, Punjabi, etc. It has a rich collection of novels, poetry, short stories, plays, biographies. It has a subscription to more than 18 magazines (some of them are also in regional languages like Bengali, Oriya, Tamil) and newspaper (like Times of India, Deccan Chronicle, Bangalore Mirror, Rajasthan Patrika) covering a broad area of interest from sports to travel, health to current affairs etc.

A less known incident about the Barack valley language movement happened on this day, 19th May, 1961. Tribute to language martyrs.

On 19 May 1971, once again 11 Bengalis were martyred for their language. Nine were killed and two others were injured in police firing at Silchar railway station (then Tarapur) in Assam's Barak Valley. Freedom fighter Ullaskar Dutt paid special tributes to these nine people. They will remain immortal in the context of language movements.
