Why does North Karnataka still lack basic amenities despite producing top political leaders for decades?
Even after Independence, influential politicians from North Karnataka have occupied high positions at both the State and national levels. Yet, districts in this region continue to lag behind in drinking water, sanitation, education, healthcare, and employment. What is the fundamental reason behind this backwardness? How much priority have these leaders actually given to their own regions?
Take Kalaburagi district, for example. Despite decades of political influence, several rural areas struggle with basic infrastructure. Instead of ensuring essential facilities for his own constituency, Priyank Kharge appears more interested in speaking about national and global issues. Does he not see the basic problems in his own backyard?
The same question applies to Raichur. Across the country, the Central Government’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has enabled crores of families to build and use toilets. Yet, in parts of rural North Karnataka, people are still forced into open defecation.
The tragic death of Ashwini, who was subjected to a brutal gang assault when she went out for open defecation in Hokrani village (Sirwar taluk), is a deeply disturbing reminder of these infrastructural failures. When women lack access to a safe toilet, serious questions arise regarding sanitation, women’s safety, and administrative failure.
While a proper investigation is needed before holding anyone directly responsible for Ashwini’s death, the government and local administration have a clear duty: ensure every village has safe toilets, proper sanitation, and adequate security for women.
Leaders who have represented this region for decades have made endless promises. But if people still struggle for toilets, clean water, and roads, their political priorities must be questioned. The people of North Karnataka need more than slogans, they need visible development. When Central Government schemes are available but fail to reach the grassroots level due to a lack of political will, it is the common people who pay the price.
