Southern Regional Station, ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute The ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal was originally started as Imperial Institute of Animal Husbandry and Dairying in 1923 at Bangalore.

It was expanded and renamed as Imperial Dairy Institute in 1936 and was known as National Dairy Research Institute after independence in 1947. Subsequently, in 1955, NDRI Headquarters was shifted to Karnal. Facilities at Bangalore were retained to function as a Regional Station to serve the Southern States. The National Dairy Research Institute as the premier Dairy Research Institution undertakes

research, teaching and extension activities towards dairy development in India. Being the National Institute, it conducts basic and applied research with the objective to enhance animal productivity and also to develop cost effective technologies for the benefit of the teeming millions. Further, the Institute provides high quality manpower to meet the human resource requirements for the overall dairy development in the country. The Institute also undertakes extension programmes for transferring the know-how from the laboratory to the farmers’ fields.

SRS of ICAR-NDRI has sucesfully organised Farmers Training program on ‘Scientific Dairying and Value-added Dairy Products’ during February 16-27, 2026, sponsored under the RKVY Project (Dairy Entrepreneurship Development among Rural Youth and Women in Aspirational Districts of Karnataka State (2021-26) at the Southern Regional Station of the ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute, Bengaluru. The training program was a capacity-building activity enabling the dairy farmers to learn about improved dairy farming practices and also the value addition of milk and milk products. 50 dairy farmers from the Aspirational Districts of Karnataka, i.e., Raichur and Yadgir Districts, has attend the training program.

Institute–Industry Meet 2026 Inaugurated at ICAR-NDRI, Bengaluru to Strengthen Dairy Sector Collaboration
Bengaluru, February 24, 2026:

The ICAR–National Dairy Research Institute (ICAR-NDRI), Southern Regional Station (SRS), Bengaluru, successfully organized the Institute–Industry Meet 2026 on February 24, 2026, to promote collaboration between research institutions and the dairy industry for technology transfer, innovation, and human resource development. The programme was presided over by Dr. Dheer Singh, Director, ICAR-NDRI, who stressed the institute’s commitment to transferring innovative dairy technologies to industry partners and ensuring their practical implementation for national dairy advancement. During the programme, a publication titled Technologies available from ICAR-NDRI was officially released, showcasing transferable technologies developed by the institute. Dr. Rajan Sharma, Joint Director (Research), ICAR-NDRI, presented an overview of these technologies and their applications in the dairy industry. He further informed that in the last decade, ICAR-NDRI has commercialized 51 technologies on 133 occasions. The Institute–Industry Meet aimed to foster meaningful partnerships between researchers, dairy cooperatives, entrepreneurs, and industry representatives. The event is expected to promote the commercialization of technologies, encourage innovation, and strengthen India’s dairy sector, particularly in Karnataka. The programme was attended by more than 70 participants from 30 industries, milk unions and start-up such as Cavinkare, Godrej, MTR, KMF, Doddla Dairy, Stellapps, etc.

Celebration of the 77th Republic Day of Bharat at SRS of ICAR-NDRI, Bengaluru on 26.1.2026. The Head of the Station unfurled the National Flag and addressed the gathering of faculty, staff, and students. The Southern Regional Station (SRS) of ICAR–National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), in association with the Indian Dairy Association – South Zone (IDA-SZ) and the Alumni Association of SRS of ICAR–NDRI, Bengaluru, Organized a National Symposium on “Viksit Bharat: Challenges, Opportunities and Way Forward for the Indian Dairy Sector” on November 28, 2025, at the SRS of ICAR–NDRI, Bengaluru. The event was held to mark National Milk Day 2025, commemorating the birth anniversary of Dr Verghese Kurien. Around 220 participants representing the dairy industry, scientists, students, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and other stakeholders participated in the event.
