Southern Regional Station, ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute The ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal was originally started as Imperial Institute of Animal Husbandry and Dairying in 1923 at Bangalore.

It was expanded and renamed as Imperial Dairy Institute in 1936 and was known as National Dairy Research Institute after independence in 1947. Subsequently, in 1955, NDRI Headquarters was shifted to Karnal. Facilities at Bangalore were retained to function as a Regional Station to serve the Southern States. The National Dairy Research Institute as the premier Dairy Research Institution undertakes research, teaching and extension activities towards dairy development in India. Being the National Institute, it conducts basic and applied research with the objective to enhance animal productivity and also to develop cost effective technologies for the benefit of the teeming millions. Further, the Institute provides high quality manpower to meet the human resource requirements for the overall dairy development in the country. The Institute also undertakes extension programmes for transferring the know-how from the laboratory to the farmers’ fields.

Celebration of the 80th Independence Day of Bharat at SRS of ICAR-NDRI, Bengaluru, on 15.8.2026. The Head of the Station, Dr Arindam Dhali, hoisted the National Flag and addressed the gathering of faculty, staff, and students. During the occasion, 'Vande Mataram' was also recited in commemoration of 150 years of our National Song.

"Khet Bachao Abhiyan" – a nationwide campaign launched by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare – aims to promote soil test-based balanced fertilizer use, improve soil health, and encourage sustainable farming practices. As part of the campaign during June 2026, ICAR–KVK, Bengaluru Rural District, in collaboration with the other regional stakeholders, organised awareness programmes, training sessions, demonstrations, and exhibitions at KVK premises on 12.6.2026.
The KVK team, along with the scientists of other ICAR institutes, including ICAR-NDRI, SRS, sensitized farmers on soil testing, balanced nutrient management, integrated nutrient management, natural farming, organic agriculture, and promotion of animal husbandry-based agriculture systems for sustainable farming practices.

The Scientists of ICAR-NDRI, SRS, Bengaluru, Organized and participated in the ‘National Campaign ‘Save Farm’ (Khet Bachao)’ organised in a cluster of villages in the Mulbagal Block of Kolar District of Karnataka State on 11.6.2026. During the campaign, farmers were sensitised about the adoption of scientific dairying practices and organic farming practices by integrating dairying in their farming systems. During the campaign, 'An Animal Health cm Infertility Camp' was also organised for the benefit of farm families who attended the campaign. The event was organised by SRS of ICAR-NDRI in association with the Karnataka State Animal Husbandry Department and Rotary Club, Mulbagal.
