Week-long Plantation Drive Concludes at HKM GDC Bandipora



The week-long Plantation Drive organized by the Social Forestry Range Bandipora in collaboration with the NSS Units of HKM Government Degree College Bandipora concluded successfully on December 4, 2024. Conducted under the banners of "Green Jammu and Kashmir 2024" and "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam," the initiative aimed to promote environmental sustainability and increase green cover in the region. During the drive, approximately 200 saplings of different species were planted, enhancing the ecological balance and adding to the campus's natural beauty.

The event saw enthusiastic participation from the college Principal, senior faculty members, NSS volunteers, and officials from the Social Forestry Department. The College Principal Prof. (Dr.) Tariq Hussain Bhat, Dr. Iqbal Hussain Qadri, Senior Faculty and Head of the Department of Botany, along with the College NSS Programme Officers, Dr. Irshad Ahmad and Prof. Bilquees Rasool, actively took part in the drive by planting trees at various locations within the college premises. Their involvement, alongside the dedication of NSS volunteers, showcased the collective commitment toward making the Green Jammu and Kashmir initiative a success.

This plantation drive not only contributed to the larger afforestation goals of the Union Territory but also served as a platform to educate participants about the critical role of trees in mitigating climate change, improving air quality, and preserving biodiversity. It emphasized the importance of community participation, particularly through the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" campaign, which added a personal and cultural dimension to the act of tree planting.

The drive culminated with a strong message about the shared responsibility of nurturing the environment and the need for sustained efforts to achieve a greener, healthier Bandipora. This initiative reflects the unwavering commitment of HKM GDC Bandipora and the Social Forestry Department toward environmental conservation and sustainable development.

Farewell Ceremony for Principal Prof. (Dr.) Tariq Hussain Bhat

HKM Government Degree College Bandipora organized a heartfelt farewell ceremony to bid adieu to the Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Tariq Hussain Bhat, on his transfer to Gandhi College Srinagar. The event was attended by the teaching and non-teaching staff, who gathered to honor his significant contributions to the institution.
The program began with several faculty members sharing their thoughts and experiences of working under the leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Tariq Hussain Bhat. Senior faculty member and HoD Botany, Dr. Iqbal Hussain Qadri, appreciated his amiable and amicable nature and credited him for fostering a cordial and inclusive atmosphere in the college. Another senior faculty member, Dr. Mohd. Sheikhul Ashraf, lauded his impactful administrative decisions and his exceptional care and support for the Local Fund Employees.
In his farewell address, the Principal reflected on his tenure at the college, expressing gratitude for the commitment and cooperation of the teaching and non-teaching staff. He shared valuable suggestions on efficiently managing an institution and encouraged the staff to continue working with dedication and unity.
As a mark of respect and appreciation, Prof. (Dr.) Tariq Hussain Bhat was honored with a shawl, mementos, and gifts presented by the teaching and non-teaching staff.

The program was skillfully managed by Dr. Sajad Manzoor, HoD Political Science, while Prof. G. M. Khan from the Department of English served as the rapporteur. Prof. Sadaf, faculty in the English Department, presented a brief vote of thanks.
The ceremony concluded on a warm and emotional note, with everyone wishing the outgoing Principal success and happiness in his future endeavours.

Final Match of Inter-College Women's Cricket Tournament held at GDC Bandipora

The final of the Inter-College Women's Cricket Tournament, organised and hosted by HKM Government Degree College Bandipora, was held on December 5, 2024. The thrilling match was played between the host college, HKM GDC Bandipora, and GDC Ganderbal. Demonstrating superior skills and teamwork, GDC Ganderbal emerged victorious, defeating the host team by seven wickets.

Winning the toss, the host team opted to bat first but struggled against the disciplined bowling attack of GDC Ganderbal. The team was bowled out for a modest total of 52 runs in just 12 overs. In response, GDC Ganderbal comfortably chased the target, losing only three wickets. The standout performer of the match was Nighat Mushtaq, who contributed significantly with both bat and ball. She scored 11 crucial runs and took two pivotal wickets, earning her the title of Player of the Match.

The winning team displayed an all-round performance, excelling in batting, bowling, and fielding, which ultimately secured their comprehensive victory.

The prize distribution ceremony was graced by senior faculty members, including Dr. Iqbal Hussain Qadri, Head of the Department of Botany, and Dr. Mohd. Sheikhul Ashraf from the same department. They congratulated the players and distributed trophies and prizes to acknowledge their efforts and achievements.

The event was seamlessly organized under the guidance of Prof. Mohammad Salim, Convener of the College Sports Committee, and Dr. Tawseef Ahmad, Physical Training Instructor of the college. Their dedication and coordination ensured the successful completion of the tournament.

The event not only highlighted the talent and passion for cricket among women but also reaffirmed the importance of sports in fostering camaraderie, discipline, and resilience among students.

Red Ribbon Club of HKM GDC Bandipora Organizes Poster Rally to Commemorate World AIDS Day

The Red Ribbon Club of the college organised a poster rally on December 3, 2024, to commemorate World AIDS Day under the able leadership of the Club’s Convener, Prof. Irfan Ahmad Wagay. The rally aimed to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and highlight this year’s theme, “Take the Rights Path,” which emphasises the importance of human rights in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Students from various departments participated with great enthusiasm, displaying creative and thought-provoking posters that underscored the need for education, empathy, and support for individuals affected by HIV/AIDS. The rally covered key areas of the campus and nearby localities, attracting the attention of community members and fostering a deeper understanding of the disease and the significance of protecting the rights of those impacted.

Prof. Wagay, addressing the participants, emphasised the role of young people in spreading awareness and breaking the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. He also encouraged everyone to adopt a rights-based approach to healthcare and social inclusion, reflecting this year’s theme.

The Red Ribbon Club of HKM Degree College Bandipora observed World AIDS Day on 2nd December 2024 with enthusiasm and commitment. Under the guidance and support of the College Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Tariq Hussain Bhat, and the Convener of the Club, Prof. Irfan Ahmad, the event sought to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and promote a rights-based approach to tackling the epidemic.

The observance featured a Debate Competition centred on this year’s World AIDS Day theme, “Take the Rights Path”. Students from various semesters actively participated, showcasing their knowledge and perspectives on the importance of safeguarding the rights of individuals affected by HIV/AIDS. Their speeches highlighted the need for inclusivity, dignity, and access to healthcare for all, aligning with the global call for action.

The participants were appreciated for their insightful contributions and were awarded certificates of participation as a token of encouragement.

NSS Camp at the adopted village Doban, Onagam Bandipora

The NSS Units of HKM Bandipora, under the able guidance of NSS Programme Officers Dr. Irshad Ahmad Bhat and Prof. Bilquees Rasool, successfully conducted an NSS camp on 23rd November 2024 at the adopted village Doban, Onagam, Bandipora. The camp witnessed the active participation of 50 NSS volunteers who engaged in various activities, including a socio-economic survey and a visit to Govt. Boys Middle School, Doban. The socio-economic survey highlighted critical issues in the village, such as a lack of water supply, inadequate health facilities, and poor transport infrastructure. Besides NSS Programme Officers, the volunteers were accompanied by the esteemed Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Tariq Hussain Bhat, and senior faculty member and HoD Botany, Dr. Iqbal Hussain Qadri, whose presence inspired and motivated the participants. The camp demonstrated the commitment of the NSS team towards community engagement and the betterment of society.

HKM Degree College observed Samvidhan Diwas (Constitution Day) on 26th November 2024 with great enthusiasm. The event commenced with a warm welcome address by the College Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Tariq Hussain Bhat, who highlighted the importance of the day and encouraged the audience to uphold the values enshrined in the Constitution.

The highlight of the celebration was an enlightening lecture delivered by Prof. Sajad Manzoor, Head of the Department of Political Science. Prof. Sajad elaborated on the historical and contemporary significance of the Indian Constitution, emphasizing its role in safeguarding the rights and duties of citizens.

As part of the program, faculty members and students enthusiastically participated in the collective reading of the Preamble to reaffirm their commitment to the principles of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.

Extension Lecture on Medicinal Herbs at HKM Degree College Bandipora

The Department of Botany at HKM Degree College Bandipora organised an engaging extension lecture titled “Use, Cultivation, and Commercialization of Medicinal Herbs in AYUSH” on 21st November 2024, as part of the Janjatiya Gaurav Divas celebrations. The event focused on the theme: “Best Health Practices of Tribals – Back to Roots – Nature First Lifestyle.”

The event was organised in collaboration with the Regional cm Facilitation Centre (RCFC), Northern Region II, under the National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB), Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, and held under the aegis of SKUAST-Kashmir. The event aimed to promote awareness of the importance of medicinal plants in alternative healthcare systems and their potential for economic growth.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Mudasir Ahmad Dar, Deputy Director of RCFC, highlighted the increasing relevance of medicinal herbs in AYUSH. He emphasised the integration of traditional knowledge with modern cultivation techniques to improve the quality and availability of medicinal plants. His talk provided an in-depth understanding of various aspects of medicinal herb cultivation, including soil preparation, climatic requirements, pest management, and sustainable farming practices. Additionally, he discussed the commercialisation of medicinal plants, covering value addition, product development, and market opportunities.

Dr. Iqbal Hussain Qadri, Head of the Department of Botany at HKM Degree College Bandipora, delivered another enlightening lecture on the “Medicinal Flora of Gurez Valley.” Dr. Qadri highlighted the global demand for natural remedies and the immense potential for India to emerge as a leader in the medicinal herb industry. He stressed that with proper cultivation techniques and strategic commercialisation, students could play a pivotal role in this field.

The interactive session saw enthusiastic participation from students, who posed insightful questions on the role of medicinal herbs in sustainable agriculture and healthcare systems.

Career Counselling and Training Program Organized by JKEDI and HKM Degree College Bandipora

The Jammu and Kashmir Entrepreneurship Development Institute (JKEDI), in collaboration with HKM Degree College Bandipora, organized an interaction program on Career Counselling and Training on Job Development Opportunities on November 19, 2024. The event aimed to guide students and unemployed youth on entrepreneurship, job development opportunities, and skill enhancement.

The session featured an insightful presentation by Mr. Bilal Ahmad Dar (Asst. Faculty EDI), who elaborated on the establishment and growth of JKEDI. He highlighted its significant contributions to empowering unemployed youth across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. According to him, JKEDI has achieved an impressive 88% success rate, resulting in the establishment of 14,000 business units. He also shared multiple avenues for securing jobs by availing the institute’s guidance, schemes, and policies.

Mr. Bilal Ahmad emphasized the importance of utilizing JKEDI’s resources for career growth and provided an overview of its training modules, loan assistance programs, and entrepreneurship support initiatives. His presentation was well-received and inspired the participants to explore new career possibilities through innovative business ideas and government-backed opportunities.

The interactive program concluded with an engaging Q&A session, where participants sought further clarification on the available opportunities and shared their career aspirations.
