Bandipora, March 8: SAKHI One Stop Centre (OSC) Bandipora has earned national recognition by being featured as the cover story in the Women’s Day Special Edition of SAKHI Shines, a publication by Pune-based Kashmira Puravasini Publication (KPP).

The magazine hails the centre as a “Model of Support for Women”, emphasizing its role in offering protection, legal aid, and rehabilitation services.

“The recognition belongs to every woman who dared to speak up and every team member who turned challenges into opportunities,” Ms. Ayoub stated in an interview. Legal Awareness Programme on Protection of Human Rights of Widows in Bandipora

Bandipora, July 31, 2024 - In accordance with the directions of the J&K Legal Services Authority under the NHRC Advisory on the Protection of Human Rights of Widows, the District Legal Services Authority Dlsa Bandipora , under the able guidance of the Chairman (Principal District & Sessions Judge Bandipora) and the supervision of the Secretary DLSA Bandipora, in coordination with the Tehsil Legal Services Committee Bandipora and in collaboration with the Social Welfare Department Bandipora, organized a special awareness programme on the protection of human rights of widows. The event was held at Conference Hall, District Drug De-Addiction Centre DDAC, Bandipora, J&K
Mr. Aamir Shafi, Panel Lawyer from DLSA Bandipora, addressed the audience, highlighting the unique challenges faced by widows worldwide. He pointed out that for many women, the devastating loss of a partner is compounded by a long-term struggle for basic rights and dignity. Despite there being over 258 million widows globally, they are often left unseen, unsupported, and unmeasured in societies. Mr. Shafi emphasized that widows face issues such as denial of inheritance rights, property grabbing, and extreme stigma and discrimination, often being perceived as 'carriers' of disease. He noted that women are significantly less likely than men to have access to old-age pensions, which can lead to destitution for older widows after the death of a spouse. He stressed the need for society to recognize and address these challenges, especially as displacement, migration, and the COVID-19 pandemic have exacerbated the situation for many widows.

Ms. Tahira Tabasum, District Mission Coordinator of SANKALP HEW, Mission Shakti, Department of Social Welfare, elaborated on specific schemes such as Mission Vatsalya, SSA, MSSC Account, and social protection initiatives. She underscored the importance of skill development, financial planning, and various assistance schemes designed to empower widows. Additionally, she provided information on the services available at the Sakhi - One Stop Centre Bandipora and other components of mission shakti.

The programme was attended by numerous widow participants from all blocks of Main Bandipora. The event had approximately 185 participants and served as a significant platform to raise awareness about the rights and support systems available to widows.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks presented by Mr. Tahir Ahmad, Jr. Assistant of the District Social Welfare Office Bandipora. This initiative marks a vital step towards ensuring the protection and empowerment of widows in the region.
