Centre Administrator, One Stop Centre Bandipora, Delivers Awareness Talk on the Role of Mothers in Building a Drug-Free Society
Bandipora, July 10: As part of the nationwide Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (NMBA), a meaningful awareness programme titled "Maa Se Guftagu" was organised today at Government Higher Secondary School Madwan, Bandipora. The programme aimed to strengthen the role of mothers in preventing substance abuse among children and promoting healthy family values.
Addressing the gathering, Ms Ishrat Ayoub, Centre Administrator, One Stop Centre (OSC) Bandipora, emphasized that the foundation of a drug-free society is laid within the home, where a mother serves as the first teacher, guide, and protector of every child.
Speaking on the occasion, the Centre Administrator stated that mothers play a pivotal role in shaping the character, values, and future of their children. She observed that while drug addiction has emerged as a growing social challenge affecting individuals, families, and communities alike, its prevention begins with awareness, communication, and strong family bonds.
She urged mothers to maintain open and trusting relationships with their children by spending quality time with them, listening to their concerns without judgment, and encouraging them to share their thoughts freely. She stressed that children who feel supported and understood at home are far less likely to fall prey to harmful influences.
Highlighting the importance of parental vigilance, she advised mothers to remain aware of their children's daily routines, peer groups, and responsible use of mobile phones, social media, and the internet. She clarified that such awareness should stem from love, care, and guidance rather than control.
The participants were also sensitised about the early warning signs of substance abuse, including sudden behavioural changes, declining academic performance, loss of interest in studies or hobbies, secrecy, unexplained financial demands, poor hygiene, and noticeable physical changes. She appealed to parents to respond with patience and understanding, encouraging them to seek professional counselling and medical support whenever necessary, as addiction is a treatable condition with timely intervention.
The Centre Administrator further encouraged mothers to create a nurturing home environment by promoting moral and ethical values, encouraging participation in sports, reading, cultural and creative activities, appreciating children's achievements, and serving as positive role models. She also highlighted the importance of regular interaction between parents, teachers, and the community to ensure the overall well-being of children.
Calling upon every mother to become an ambassador of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, she urged them to make three commitments: to spend meaningful time with their children every day, to maintain open and compassionate communication without fear or judgment, and to actively spread awareness against drug abuse within their families and communities.
Concluding her address, she remarked that safeguarding children from the menace of drugs is a shared social responsibility that begins at home. Through awareness, love, patience, and collective action, families and communities can together build a healthier, safer, and drug-free society.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from mothers, teachers, students, and members of the local community, who appreciated the initiative and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the vision of a Drug-Free India under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.
