Webinar Sheds Light on "Blue Carbon" and its Environmental Significance

In a bid to raise awareness about the crucial role of "Blue Carbon" in environmental conservation, a webinar was organized by Mo gaan Paribesh Parisad and Swami Vivekananda Loka Sansad on January 21, 2024. The event, chaired by the President of Odisha Environment Society and Mo gaan Environmental Council, Professor Sundar Narayan Patra, saw enthusiastic participation from over 50 environment protectionists.
The inaugural session commenced with Mr. Ganesh Prasad Tiadi initiating the proceedings with Vaidik Mantra Pathan, followed by a soulful rendition of Vivek Vani Pathan by Shri Radhakrushna Moharana. Professor Sundar Narayan Patro, in his role as the chairman, then introduced the distinguished guests, setting the stage for an insightful discussion on the intricacies of "Blue Carbon."
The keynote speaker, Dr. Narottam Sahoo, captivated the audience with an in-depth exploration of carbon classification, emphasizing the significance of black, green, blue, and brown carbon. Dr. Sahoo elucidated on the remarkable carbon-absorbing capabilities of mangroves, sea grasses, and tidal grass species, surpassing even terrestrial forests in efficiency.
Highlighting the environmental benefits, Dr. Sahoo expounded on how the sequestration of carbon by sea plants enhances the resilience of mangroves, providing protection against storms and cyclones. Additionally, he underscored the role of sea creatures in contributing to the sequestration of this valuable blue carbon.
Dr. Sahoo stressed the need for extensive research on blue carbon and the development of strategic plans and projects to safeguard the Earth. He called for active participation from the youth, emphasizing the importance of their involvement in environmental conservation efforts.
The discussion delved into the diverse ecosystem of the Odisha coastal line, presenting opportunities for the absorption of atmospheric carbon. The question-answer session that followed was marked by valuable insights from participants, including Prof. Chittaranjan Nayak, Prof. Pralay Kumar Nanda, Manindra Kumar Dixit, Dr. Dasharathi Mohapatra, Dr. Bharat Panda, Dr. Prativa Nanda, Ramchandra Prusti, Rajballav Sahoo and many others.
The program concluded with a comprehensive summary and a vote of thanks extended by Mr. Pratap Kumar Kar. The participants concluded the event with a Shanti Patha, expressing their commitment to environmental protection and sustainable practices. The webinar served as a platform to foster knowledge exchange and collective efforts toward a greener, more sustainable future.
