Sub: press statement
Dated Tura the 8th of October 2015
Sir/Madam,
It is through your esteemed daily that the undersignatories seek to convey the following statements pursuant to the upcoming GHADC polls.
The period prior to the upcoming GHADC polls, the Garo community as a whole has been protesting against the participation of non-tribals in the GHADC polls, asserting that the GHADC should exclusively be relevant only to the indigenous tribals of Garo Hills; their protection of culture, customs & tradition. However, till date, neither any political party, nor any public representative has served the purpose or displayed any interest in fulfilling the aspirations of the Garo sentiments, which is the express right over the GHADC.
The apathy of the public representatives and the political parties towards the sentiments of the Garo community has obligated the FKJGP, GSU, AYWO, ADE & FAF to represent the Garo community’s opinions. The conglomeration of NGO’s has toured throughout the whole of Garo Hills to ascertain whether the Garo community is in reality against the participation of non-tribals in the GHADC elections. As per the feedback, the Garo community is unanimously rejecting the participation of non-tribals in the GHADC.
The fact that the Government and the political figures have failed to take cognizance of the aspirations of the Garo community we the conglomerate NGOs hereby declare the 10th, 11th and 12th of October 2015 as days of mourning, and request all our fellow Tribal brethrens to express solidarity by mourning and abstaining from casting their votes in the GHADC polls. We request all Tribals to abstain from their daily routines/activities during these days. However, we may all pursue our religious rites and emergent activities. The 10th, 11th and 12th shall be termed as the “Mourning Days” or the “Kalimani Salrang”.
The conglomerate NGOs have toured almost the entire Garo Hills; West Garo Hills (the Plain belts included), South-West Garo Hills (the CM’s and his brother’s constituencies included), South Garo Hills, East Garo Hills and the North Garo Hills (stretching upto far flung areas like A.dokgre). wherin each of the public meetings conducted by the conglomerate NGOs the Garo community has unanimously resolved to protest, mourn and boycott the upcoming GHADC polls. Therefore it is our final appeal to all the Tribal/Garo brethrens to stand up for each other and display unity in rejecting the GHADC polls in its current form by boycotting the upcoming elections. The Tribals of Garo Hills has for the first time in history united to protest the imperialist schemes of the non-tribals and pro-NonTribal politics, thus, we anticipate that no individual will betray this movement, despite their political or biological affiliations.
Yours imploring signatories
