A BRIEF HISTORY OF NICM
Natesan Institute of Cooperative Management (NICM) was started in 1954, in Chennai. Earlier it was functioning in Kilpauk and since 1976, it has been functioning in the present serene campus at Anna Nagar, Chennai. Dr.Natesan, a Medical Doctor by Profession and a Cooperator by conviction was a veteran in the Cooperative movement of Tamil Nadu. When he was the chairman of th
e Tamil Nadu Cooperative Union, he started this Cooperative Training College. After his life, to honor his contribution to the cooperative movement, it was called as Natesan Cooperative Training College (NCTC). Later, NCTC was renamed as Natesan Institute of Cooperative Management (NICM). NICM is a part of the National Network of Twenty (20) Institutes of Cooperative Management, functioning under the administrative control of the National Council for Cooperative Training (NCCT), New Delhi, which is an autonomous body, promoted by the Ministry of Cooperation (MoC), Govt. ACTIVITIES OF THE INSTITUTE
The basic objective of the Institute is to impart management training to the middle management/functional officers of the cooperative and allied sectors such as Animal Husbandry, Dairy, Coop. & Milk Audit, Industries, Handlooms, Housing, Social Welfare, and Fisheries, etc., through various training programmes. Apart from training, the Institute conducts research and consultancy services to various cooperative stakeholders in the state of Tamil Nadu. Of late, the Institute conducts Capacity Building Training programmes for the Officers of TN State Secretariat and Resettlement training programmes for the Defence personnel in the cadre of JCOs/ORs, sponsored by, the Directorate General Resettlement (DGR), Ministry of Defence, Govt. Further, with the rich experience in Management training, the Institute diversified its activities into Management training by imparting an MBA Professional Course, affiliated to the University of Madras, approved by AICTE, New Delhi, to graduate students, since 2008. The Institute focuses on Human Resource Development through capacity development of the stakeholders in cooperatives by imparting effective training for innovation, and skill development and creating awareness about the various schemes introduced by the Government to reach its benefits to the farmers and other Agriculture-related members to augment their income. Every year, the institute conducts more than 80 training Programmes including Long term and Short term programmes, targeting the farmers/cooperative personnel/Government officials. Besides the core programme Higher Diploma in Cooperative Management (HDCM), NICM offers various sectoral Diploma programmes viz., Diploma in Industrial Cooperative Management (DICM), Diploma in Dairy Cooperatives(DMDC) and Diploma in Handloom Cooperative Management(DHCM)
The Training programmes are designed and organized on various functional management areas with varying durations keeping in view of the target group's requirements aiming to strengthen the societies in general and the farmer members in particular. The institute has a team of dedicated, multi-disciplinary, and Multi-sectoral highly experienced and qualified faculty members with all India transferability amongst the units of NCCT. Apart from that, an ample number of faculty members/experts from various Govt. Departments / Universities / Management Institutes / Corporate Bodies are also associated with the institute to provide updated /quality training to the participants.
