Most UPSC aspirants believe the person who studies more will automatically score more. But Mains doesn’t work like that. Two students can study the same topic, from the same coaching, for the same number of hours — and still end up with completely different marks. The difference is usually not effort, but approach.
Many aspirants focus on collecting information: notes, articles, amendments, facts, and highlights. Rankers focus on building opinions, linking concepts, understanding consequences, and learning how to reason through a question. That’s the real shift from “studying for Prelims” to “writing for Mains.”
The next time you revise a topic, don’t just ask what happened. Ask why it happened, what changed because of it, and what criticism exists around it. That’s where stronger answers begin.
Save this for your next revision session.
