Why is Guru Purnima Celebrated? – Its Significance
Guru Purnima is one of the most sacred festivals in the Sanātana Dharma tradition. It is celebrated on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Hindu month of Āshādha (June–July). This day is dedicated to expressing gratitude, reverence, and devotion to the Guru, who dispels the darkness of ignorance and leads the disciple toward wisdom, righteousness, and self-realization.
The word Guru comes from Sanskrit:
• Gu – Darkness (ignorance)
• Ru – The remover
Thus, a Guru is "the one who removes the darkness of ignorance through the light of knowledge."
Guru Purnima is especially celebrated in honor of Bhagavān Vedavyāsa (Veda Vyāsa), the great sage who compiled the four Vedas, authored the Mahābhārata, composed the Brahma Sūtras, and gifted the world the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam and many other Purāṇas. Therefore, this day is also known as Vyāsa Purnima.
Spiritual Importance
According to the scriptures, God may bless a seeker, but it is through the Guru that divine knowledge is received. The Guru awakens spiritual consciousness, teaches self-discipline, and guides the disciple toward liberation (mokṣa).
The Guru is regarded as the living embodiment of divine grace.
Sanskrit Verse
गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः ।
गुरुः साक्षात् परं ब्रह्म तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः ॥
Meaning:
"The Guru is Brahmā, the Guru is Viṣṇu, the Guru is Lord Maheśvara (Śiva). The Guru is indeed the Supreme Absolute Reality. I offer my humble obeisance to that revered Guru."
Another famous verse says:
अज्ञानतिमिरान्धस्य ज्ञानाञ्जनशलाकया ।
चक्षुरुन्मीलितं येन तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः ॥
Meaning:
"I offer my respectful obeisance unto the Guru, who has opened my eyes, blinded by the darkness of ignorance, with the torch of divine knowledge."
