Today, as Rambam opens its Fortified Underground Emergency Hospital, a touching story emerges. M., a soldier serving in the IDF's Search and Rescue Brigade, was one of many soldiers who arrived this morning to help prepare the underground hospital for full operations and assist in transferring patients from unfortified aboveground facilities to the underground hospital.

Among the patients she accompanied was her grandmother, who had been hospitalized at Rambam for several days and was about to be discharged.
As they were about to leave the department, a siren sounded across the Haifa area, and M and her grandmother suddenly found themselves hurrying toward the nearest fortified space.

"Today, my beloved granddaughter came to rescue me," her grandmother laughed as they embraced.
"My grandmother is now on her way home, and we're continuing to prepare the underground hospital. There's still a lot of work ahead of us.," M. concluded.

Warm congratulations to Dr. Shahar Shelly, Director of the Neurology Department and Director of the AI Neurology Lab at the Technion Faculty of Medicine, on receiving the prestigious Zimin Institute Award for Outstanding Researchers.

Dr. Shelly received the award together with his research partner, Professor Dvir Aran, for developing an advanced artificial intelligence tool that generates smart clinical insights from hospitalization data. This innovative development is expected to serve as a kind of “vaccine” against medical malpractice claims within healthcare organizations and to significantly enhance patient safety.

Yesterday, a ceremony was held at the Official Residence of the President of the State of Israel to present the 2026 Recognition Award from the Nursing Administration at the Ministry of Health.

gila hyams, Director of Nursing at Rambam, was selected to receive the prestigious award under the theme "אור איתן" ("Or Eitan" - Enduring Light), recognizing groundbreaking excellence. The award was granted in acknowledgment of her exceptional work in and leadership of the nursing system during the most complex moments of crisis in recent years.

Gila began her career as Israel’s first trauma nurse. She established the Teaching Center for Trauma Emergency and MCS at Rambam, and over the years has trained thousands of healthcare professionals in Israel and around the world. Thanks to her knowledge-sharing with colleagues worldwide, the lives of hundreds of patients have been saved, and the standing of Israel’s healthcare system has been strengthened on the international stage.

For Gila, the profession is not only about the use of advanced technology but also the ability to look a patient in the eye during their most difficult moments and instill in them the confidence that they are not alone.

Gila, this recognition is yours, but the pride is all ours!

A Courageous Call: "Dad don't worry"

Exactly one month ago, a military helicopter landed at Rambam Health Care Campus carrying a wounded soldier. A., a 26-year-old from Gush Etzion near Jerusalem, is a reservist in the IDF’s elite 1st Golani Brigade.

During combat, he attempted to intercept an approaching drone with his personal weapon, the drone exploded, and shrapnel penetrated his spine. Even in those moments, A. understood that he had been seriously injured.

Upon arriving at Rambam and assisted by a soldier from the IDF’s Ram 2 Liaison Unit, A. immediately called his father. With the phone held close to his ear and without hesitation, he said:
“Dad, I'm at Rambam Hospital, I was injured by an explosive, but it’s really nothing serious. Everything is okay, and they’re taking care of me.”
Immediately afterward, A. underwent the first of a series of surgeries.

Rambam wishes him a full and speedy recovery and salutes his courage, resilience, and service.

From Rambam to Tanzania: Dr. Omri Emodi and Dr. Zach Sharoni Bring Smiles Back to Patients

In addition to their extensive responsibilities at Rambam, Dr. Omri Emodi, Director of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Dr. Zach Sharoni, a senior physician in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Head of the Cleft Lip and Palate Treatment Program, have continued a long-standing tradition through Operation Smile. For more than a decade, whenever their busy schedules allow, they travel abroad to join international medical teams in providing specialized surgery in regions where access to complex medical care remains limited.

Most recently, Dr. Emodi led a delegation of 11 physicians and surgeons from Israel, Mexico, Egypt, and Rwanda to Tanzania, where they performed cleft lip and palate surgeries for local patients.

Dr. Emodi explains:
"Our schedule was particularly intense, with workdays extending beyond 12 hours. We dedicated one day to training the local medical team, followed by a day of patient examinations and triage, five days of surgery, and a final day of follow-up examinations and post-procedure monitoring.

"During the mission, we evaluated 80 patients and performed complex surgeries on 44 patients of all ages. These procedures transform lives while equipping local physicians with the tools and skills they need to continue providing care independently in the future."

Whether restoring a patient’s smile, correcting a deformity, or performing other complex procedures, Rambam physicians approach these missions with deep purpose and commitment. Their encounters with local healthcare professionals, patients, and families inspire and motivate them to return time and again.

In every kibbutz and moshav across Israel, people know the tradition well: during Shavuot, they proudly present and celebrate the babies born over the past year. At Rambam, we happily embrace joyful traditions that celebrate new life.

In anticipation of Shavuot, Rambam’s Division of Gynecology and Obstetrics transformed its departments into festive scenes inspired by spring, wheat fields, orchards, dairies, and other symbols of the holiday.

Photographer Lidi Tapiero captured beautiful images of some of Rambam’s newborns against the colorful backdrops. Parents received the photographs as cherished keepsakes and lasting reminders of their babies’ birth at Rambam.

“I have never felt this strong, mentally and physically, as I do now, and this is still without a leg.”

When Aharon Goldenberg said these words when he was discharged, and a wave of emotion passed through everyone in the room.
Aharon, 21, from Jerusalem, arrived at Rambam on March 29 after being severely injured in a drone strike. For nearly two months, the hospital became his second home, and our teams became his second family.
He went through a complex and challenging medical journey from the ICU to the Trauma Step-down Unit, through Plastic Surgery, and finally to Orthopedics A. At every stage, our teams fought alongside him, for his life, for his body, and above all, for his spirit.

Last week came an emotional goodbye as we sent him off with hugs and great pride toward his next step, rehabilitation at Sheba Medical Center.

T2MED 2026: Driving the Future of Medical Innovation!

The annual T2MED 2026 hackathon - a powerful collaboration between Rambam Health Care Campus and the Technion - was an absolute success! Over an intensive 48-hour weekend, medical students, engineers, and scientists joined forces to develop practical, real-world solutions for actual hospital needs.

Moving far beyond theoretical concepts, teams tackled critical problem tracks:

- Innovation in surgical environments

- Early diagnostic tools

- Emergency medicine

- Efficient healthcare management

This incredible initiative was led by Dr. Lior Lev-Tov (Attending Physician, Department of Neurosurgery). Students also gained invaluable real-world insights from Rambam Deputy Director Dr. Netanel Horowitz, who led an in-depth tour focusing on the complexities of healthcare management, safety, and quality.

Special thanks to our dedicated mentors who made this an invaluable learning event: Dr. Dana Baron Shahaf (Unit Director, Neurosurgery Anesthesia), Ravit Edelman (Director of Nursing, Maternity Division), and Pazit Gelbar (Operating Room and Anesthesia Nurse).

"Reset" the Immune System? The New Frontier of CAR-T Therapy.
Could a "small bag of magic cells" be the key to treating life-threatening autoimmune diseases?
While CAR-T cell therapy has already revolutionized oncology, new research shows its potential to "reset" the immune system in patients with severe, treatment-resistant autoimmune conditions. Dr. Ofrat Beyar-Katz, Director of the Cellular Immunotherapy Unit at Rambam Health Care Campus, weighs in on a recent landmark case where a patient saw remission across three concurrent autoimmune disorders.

"CAR-T cells are programmed to recognize and eliminate the B cells that drive inflammation," explains Dr. Beyar-Katz. "Once removed, new 'naive' B cells develop—effectively resetting the system."

At Rambam, we are proud to be at the forefront of this evolution, collaborating with global medical centers and pharmaceutical leaders to explore how early intervention with CAR-T can prevent irreversible organ damage and restore quality of life.

While Dr. Beyar-Katz emphasizes that we are still in the research phase, the results are promising. "Recently, we treated a young patient with an autoimmune disease at Rambam," she shares. "The patient responded well and underwent the treatment safely."
