🚨 Urgent Humanitarian Appeal – SOS to Save the Displaced of Abasan Al-Kabira in Al-Mawasi, Khan Younis – Catastrophe upon Catastrophe
Since the early morning hours, we have been receiving dozens of distress calls from families displaced from Abasan Al-Kabira who are currently staying in the Al-Mawasi areas west of Khan Younis. Their tents have turned into pools of water due to the severe low-pressure storm system currently hitting the Gaza Strip.
🌧️ Unprecedented, heavy rainfall has flooded the fragile tents, soaked through the tarpaulins, and penetrated the shelters of the displaced. This has led to the flooding of their meager possessions and the accumulation of water around the refuge sites, as there is no infrastructure or drainage channels.
🛑 The families – children, women, and the sick – are now out in the open after a number of tents collapsed. Some are attempting to seek shelter under plastic sheets or worn-out blankets amidst relentless, strong winds. There are no tools, no resources, and no alternative locations to move them to.
🚨 Emergency teams, volunteers, and benevolent residents are trying to help with the bare essentials, but the scale of the flooding and the extent of the damage exceed their capacities, given the severe lack of equipment and necessary means to manage the disaster.
💧 Many areas are covered in water mixed with sewage, signaling a major health hazard that could lead to the spread of diseases and infections among thousands of displaced people.
❗ What is happening right now in Al-Mawasi, Khan Younis, is an absolute humanitarian catastrophe. To remain silent about it is to place the lives of the displaced in immediate peril.
🔊 We issue an urgent appeal to all international, aid, and humanitarian organizations: Immediate action is a necessity, not an option. The displaced people of Abasan Al-Kabira are in urgent need of:
Rainproof alternative shelters, specifically caravans.
Blankets and thick winter clothing.
Pumps for water removal.
Urgent relief supplies.
