The club aims are simply to promote and foster an interest in the natural environment, and to educate and inform it's members through shared experience and interests. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month in the Pumphouse at the Wexford Wildfowl Reserve at 8pm. Field trips are held the second Saturday of every month. Membership of the WNFC will entitle you to attend our monthly lectures by guest speakers and also to attend regular field trips organised by the club. Please see our website for all further information as some events can be subject to change of date/venue.

★★★ Out Looking for the Ivy Bee ★★★
Found it a couple of days ago on flowering ivy (of course!) on a south facing hedgerow. About 1km inland from the coast at Curracloe. I hear reports that this relatively new species has made it far up the east coast and recently also in Co Clare.
Report any sightings to the National Biodiversity Data Center.

★★★ October Lecture - Soil Health ★★★
On Thursday 1st October at 8pm in the Pumphouse at Wexford Wildfowl Reserve Ardcavan (Y35EY89) we will hear a talk on "Assessing and Managing Soil Health” by Dr Fiona Brennan, Teagasc Soil Biology Research Officer, Johnstown Castle. Non-members welcome too and a €5 door fee applies which includes refreshments.
Soils are essential for life on earth, providing food, clean water and habitats for biodiversity, contributing to climate resilience and supporting our cultural heritage and landscapes. Healthy soils are teeming with life - this diversity is quite stunning. This life underpins the majority of essential processes within soil and is critical for delivering a whole range of vital ecosystem functions.

What if your brain could change (for the better) just by going outside?

Research shows that after just one hour in nature:

The part of your brain linked to fear becomes less active

The part that helps manage stress becomes stronger

Negative thoughts begin to ease.

Nature doesn’t just change how you feel - it changes your brain.

You have the chance to tell the UK Government how important nature is to your health.

★★★ Still Out There! ★★★
You might think that with the heat fading and weather deteriorating that all the nice insects are gone. Indeed not, and with the cooler weather they slow down giving opportunity for study. And look carefully at the berry bushes because many insects are topping up on vitamin C and sugar! The Clouded Yellow - a summer migrant from North Africa and Southern Europe - cannot survive the winter in Ireland so generally dies out. However, a scientific paper by Freddie Walsh and Margaret Walsh published in 2014 (The Irish Naturalists’ Journal, 33(2), 89–92. http://www.jstor.org/stable/24393598 ) reported the Clouded Yellow overwintering in the Raven Woods, Wexford (thanks Brian Nelson for this tip). There were so many sightings of them this year that it surely must be considered a 'Clouded Yellow Year' (periodic mass migrations).

🚨 It is official: summer 2026 was the hottest summer ever recorded in Western Europe.
This is according to the Copernicus EU Climate Change Service (C3S), who shows that this summer is surpassing the previous record set in 2003.

Europe is warming at roughly twice the global average rate, making it the fastest-warming continent on Earth, due to climate change.

🌡️ Heat
August brought further heatwaves across the region, continuing an exceptional run of extreme heat that began in May.

💧 Drought
Widespread dryness affected much of western Europe and large parts of central and eastern Europe in August, in some areas persisting since May. C3S reports severe drought conditions in France, the United Kingdom, Hungary, Romania and Serbia.

🏞️ River flows
Across these dry regions, major European rivers saw exceptionally low flows, including the Rhine, Danube, Southern Bug and Dnieper.

★★★ Cetacean Spotting ★★★
One of our members - Harm Deenen - volunteers each year to assist with national records on cetacean activity (whales, dolphins, porpoises) by travelling on board passanger ferries from Rosslare to mainland europe. This is kindly facilitated by the ferry operators and yields valuable national data. He sent in a great shot of a Common Dolphin enjoying surfing the ships wake. 26 cetacean species have been recorded in Irish waters.
Find out more about Ireland's cetaceans here: https://iwdg.ie/about-us/
