Trim Castle Welcome to the official page for Trim Castle an OPW managed site.

Trim Castle, the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland, was constructed over a thirty-year period by Hugh de Lacy and his son Walter. Hugh de Lacy was granted the Liberty of Meath by King Henry II in 1172 in an attempt to curb the expansionist policies of Richard de Clare, (Strongbow). Construction of the massive three storied Keep, the central stronghold of the castle, was begun c. 1176 on the site of an earlier wooden fortress. This massive twenty-sided tower, which is cruciform in shape, was protected by a ditch, curtain wall and moat. Visitors have two options: they can walk around the grounds on a self guided tour or they can join a guided tour which takes them to the top of the Keep.

07/08/2026

On Saturday, 15th August next Heritage Week begins at Trim Castle with FREE TOURS inside the Central Keep tower all day. These tours are very popular and limited in number so do get your place (your coloured wristband) at the Ticket Office on arrival. At the moment we do not have a facility for prebooking so places are offered on a first come first served basis. Tours will run regularly throughout the day but if you have a waiting period until your tour starts you can explore the grounds of the castle with multiple information panels and excellent illustrations for self-guiding. We're right in the heart of Trim and on the south bank of the River Boyne so there are several built historical and natural places to explore within a few minutes walk of the castle, as well as opportunities for refreshments at cafes, restaurants and hotels close by.
Please note that due to the historic nature of the Keep tower it is not wheelchair accessible and the steep medieval spiral stairs may be challenging for some visitors.
We open at 10am and last possible tour of the Keep is at 4.45pm.
See you here on the 15th and indeed throughout !
