VOICES OF THE FAMINE WAY | VOLUME 4 | EQUINE CATHEDRAL

In Volume 4, Sabrina Brady, Events Coordinator at Strokestown Park, takes us inside the remarkable vaulted stables, once nicknamed the Equine Cathedral.

Built alongside the house in the 1740s, the stables were designed by renowned architect Richard Cassels. Their elegant Italianate columns reflect the architectural grandeur of the estate, while inscriptions left by workers offer glimpses into the lives of those who lived and worked here.

But behind the beauty of this space lies a more complex history. While fine horses were housed within these walls, people living beyond the estate faced very different conditions.

Sabrina explores this striking contrast, reminding us that the history of these places is not just about architectural beauty, but also about the inequalities and parallel lives that shaped Ireland’s past.

Voices Along the Famine Way shares the stories of the places, people and histories that help us understand our shared past.

The Garden team have been busy preparing no-dig beds for the delicious strawberries that have thrived in the Slip Garden for many years.

Among the varieties is the Royal Sovereign strawberry, one of the oldest varieties, known for its wonderfully sweet flavour. 🍓

By using the no-dig method, the team are helping to preserve soil health, creating the ideal conditions to grow stronger, healthier plants. 🌿
