Ordinary Seaman Alex Costello from the Dublin Unit of the NSR recently completed his first patrol onboard the LE William Butler Yeats. His highlight of the patrol was firing the GPMG. He also obtained his steering ticket which qualifies him to drive the ship under command. He undertook QM ( Quartermaster) duties and was part of the duty watch underway and at anchor. If you are looking for a challenge and want a hobby less ordinary , recruitment for the NSR in Cork, Dublin, Limerick and Waterford will be opening shortly. Chief Petty Officer Deasy from the Cork Unit wrote: I joined the NSR 18 years ago with no idea what to expect. Over half my life later I’m a senior NCO in Cork Unit NSR, with responsibility for training.

As a 17-year-old student, the NSR was a change to experience a totally different way of life and gave me the opportunity to undertake numerous courses in seamanship, fire fighting, boat handling, weapons and leadership to list a few, and to serve on-board Naval Ships at sea.

Now as an engineering project manager, the NSR continues to deliver on the same, but also gives me an outlet from normal day-to-day life while allowing me contribute back to the Defence Forces by training the younger members as they come up through the ranks.

I’ve had some fantastic instructors and mentors over the years, Reserve and Permanent, Navy and Army who have heavily influenced and shaped who I am today, and for me the highlight of my career now is being in a position to hopefully offer the same back to those joining behind me.

I strongly believe in what a life in what the Reserve can offer and the values it instils.

OS Thornton from the Dublin Unit wrote: I have completed a Bachelor Degree in Aviation Technology and also a Bachelor of Science in Transport Operations and Technology. I am currently working as a Graduate Aircraft Design Engineer with CAE Parc Aviation. I’ve been a member of the Dublin unit Naval Service Reserve for the past two years. Since then I have been undertaking a wide range of training. To date I have successfully completed training in damage control and fire-fighting, personal survival techniques, military first responders/ emergency first responder, global maritime distress and safety systems as well as a variety of military and maritime training. Additionally, I was
successful in being part of the Defence Forces sailing team for Volvo Cork Week 2022. My
favourite and most memorable experience to date was being a member of the crew on board
LE George Bernard Shaw, where I spent 4 weeks on board. I had the opportunity to carry out a wide variety of tasks and roles while at sea, patrolling predominantly the West coast of Ireland, seeing places that I would have otherwise not have visited. Taking in some spectacular scenery along the
way. Visiting places such as the Skellig Islands and Bere Island to name a few. The teamwork
and comradery that I have experienced since joining the unit is next to none with everyone
looking out for one another both within and outside of the military environment. I am very
much looking forward to seeing what new and exciting challenges that the NSR has to offer myself next.
