How to extra seeds from a variety of plants
How to store the seeds so that they will be viable

Running from September to December 2026, Portlaoise Library will feature four of the great masterpieces of European Cinema. All films will be screened with subtitles, and refreshments will be served. No booking is required and all are welcome.

Our first screening, taking place on Thursday 17th September, is the 1956 French film 'A Man Escaped'. Directed by Robert Bresson, and based on a true story, the film concerns the story of a French Resistance fighter who has been condemned to death in a N**i prison and who resolves to attempt an escape. Both a gripping thriller and a profound meditation on the value of life and of personal redemption, this exquisite masterpiece is one of the pinnacles of European cinema, one which demonstrates the vitality of film itself as one of the greatest forms of artistic expression.

This season of films is being screened by Portlaoise Library in association with Europe Direct Portlaoise in connection with Cultúr 2026, marking Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
France: Thursday 17th September: 'A Man Escaped'. Directed by Robert Bresson.
Germany: Thursday 15th October: 'Fear Eats the Soul'. Directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder.
Italy: Thursday 11th November: 'The Bicycle Thieves'. Directed by Vittorio De Sica.
Sweden: Thursday 17th December: 'Summer Interlude'. Directed by Ingmar Bergman.
