As a new Family and Community Resource Centre, we are becoming increasingly aware of the many different shapes a family can take — and the many ways in which families care for and support one another.
Kinship care is when a child or young person lives full-time with a relative or family friend because they are unable to live with their parents. It allows children and young people to remain connected to the people, relationships, culture and community they know, while providing them with a sense of belonging, security and acceptance.
Grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, cousins and close family friends have always stepped forward when families experience crisis, separation, illness, addiction, loss or other difficult circumstances. They open their homes, rearrange their lives and take on the responsibility of caring for a child or young person when their parents are unable to do so.
These families are all around us.
At King’s Island Family & Community Resource Centre, we recognise and value families in all their forms. We want our centre to be a place where every family feels welcome, respected and supported — whatever their circumstances or family structure.
We work alongside grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, guardians, extended family members and family friends who have taken on the role of caring for a child or young person.
Sometimes family support means practical help. Sometimes it means having someone to talk to, finding the right service, navigating systems, accessing information or simply knowing that you are not alone.
Whatever your family looks like, you belong here.
🧡 Kinship Care Week | 5–9 October 2026 🧡
Kinship carers are relatives and family friends who raise children when their parents are unable to care for them. Their support can help children maintain important relationships, stay connected to their family and community, and find stability and a sense of belonging during a challenging time.
Thank you to all kinship carers for the care and commitment you give to children and families.
Kinship Care Ireland offers information and support for carers and families. You can also contact your local Family Resource Centre to ask about support available in your area.
