🕯️ Throwback Thursday: The Chronicles of Kilrush Revisited: Local History and Lore with Noel Kilkenny

This Halloween season, we're taking you on a journey to visit the Vandeleur Mausoleum, where the powerful (and infamous) Vandeleurs of Kilrush were laid to rest. Only a five-minute walk from Vandeleur Walled Garden, this mausoleum houses the remains of Colonel Crofton Moore Vandeleur and his kin, the former landlords of the area, whose legacy is steeped in both influence and infamy. 📜

In this episode, we tell the story of Colonel Crofton Moore Vandeleur, notorious for evicting over 1,000 families during the Great Famine. Some say that if the Vandeleurs could witness the Ireland of today, they’d be turning in their graves...

Back by popular demand, this workshop blends creepy with creativity! 🕷️ Children can design and paint their very own ceramic pumpkin masterpiece in a fun, festive setting.

📍 Workshops run from Monday, October 26th to Friday, October 30th
📅 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday | 🕙 11am & 3pm
📅 Thursday | 🕙 11am, 1pm & 3pm

☘️ Exciting News: The Kilrush Genealogy Conference 2026 is this Friday! ☘️
We would like to wish our friends in the Kilrush & District Historical Society the best of luck with their upcoming Kilrush Genealogy Conference, which runs throughout the weekend!

📅 Friday, 9th – Sunday, 11th October 2026
📍 Kilrush, Co. Clare

This landmark event comes ahead of the much-anticipated release of the 1926 Irish Census, opening up new opportunities for people to explore their family history and reconnect with their roots. With expert speakers, genealogy consultations, local heritage tours, traditional music, and opportunities to discover the rich history of West Clare, it promises to be a fascinating and memorable weekend.

A team of experienced genealogists will also provide one-to-one consultations throughout the weekend. Optional activities include a Loop Head bus tour, a visit to Scattery Island, and a conference closing dinner (bookable via the website). Free events include a historical walking tour of Kilrush and a traditional music seisiún.
We encourage our local community and visitors alike to check it out and help give our guests a warm West Clare welcome! ☘️
