SCHOOL & LIBRARY VISITS
We provide a range of wildlife and natural history road shows for Libraries, Schools and Colleges for any age group and would like to make you aware of our services. We feel that it is important to educate our next generation to appreciate our wildlife heritage. We believe that the way to learn about nature is through an up close personal experience and we have a multitude of animals that we use as ambassadors of the animal kingdom. We pride ourselves at aiming our lessons to the child’s level of understanding making it an exciting experience. Our lessons add to the pupils' appreciation and knowledge of natural history, arouse their curiosity, promote respect and create a desire to get out and see animals in their own natural environment. These programs give children and teachers an opportunity to see, in action, what they study in natural science and they also open the door to endless possibilities for future project work. ROAD SHOW

Yesterday was international Fox Day , were a day late but good news is never too late .

Olivia brought this Fox to us last month, he turned up at her house with a very bad wound on his neck , she trapped him and dropped him to us , he was in beautiful condition thanks to Olivia care , I don’t think your average Fox would have survived the ordeal but with his healthy condition and some Animal Magic he made an amazing recovery and went home today as good as new .

We gave him the name Séan after one of our followers who gave us a very generous donation, thanks very much Séan .

Our flock of Wood pigeons is starting to increase again with 4 squabs who arrived over the last few weeks, they were just about started to feed for themselves when we got a call from a lady in Limerick who found a squab in her garden and two more arrived last night from Tipperary,

Rosie moved the older guys out today into an aviary and coincidentally there’s several Wood pigeons calling every day feeding on the berries of the elder trees outside the aviary , the youngster won’t be ready for another couple of weeks but it will give them a great chance to have a flock to join .

A few weeks ago we mentioned that juvenile Gull Season was finished but we forgot about the guys who were looking out the window day dreaming when they were being taught how to survive when they leave mum and dad .

We had 7 in since and in fairness it wasn’t their fault that they ended up in trouble , Gulls or any wildlife didn’t evolve over hundreds of thousands of years to end up living in cities trying to survive on our leftovers.

I don’t remember their full stories but a few stand out , a lady called Karen O Sullivan rang me about a gull , she was nervous about picking him up , I told her that I had gone into Limerick too many times for nothing and I wasn’t happy about going in unless the bird was secure and I knew for sure he would be there , she offered to wait for me and keep an eye on him , I explained to her that I can never leave here with the drop of a hat and it would be at least 45 minutes before I could leave and probably 45 minutes to get there , she had no problem waiting but about 10 minutes later I realized that Rosie had a doctors appointment and I couldn’t leave for 2 hours , I rang her back and told her , I said you head away home and I’ll go in anyways but she said she would wait , she ended up waiting nearly 3 hours for me , stood there protecting the Gull who was laying in the gully , a guy in a shop told me the bird was there 3 days , I wasn’t going to say it but how many people walked by .

The second situation, I got a call from Dave after he saw a gull getting hit by a car , Dave and a friend escorted the Gull safely across the road and stayed with him until Emma arrived to collect him .

We got a call from a lady about a Gull that was stuck in a walled off car park , she was advised to walk him out of the car park , she followed that advice and he got clipped by a car so she walked him back in and rang us , Helen and Becky offered to go in for him , they hadn’t caught a Gull before so Rosie and myself gave them all our tips for different scenarios, they headed off to do battle and to be honest I’m not sure if I was jealous or just disgusted but they open the pet carrier, put it on the ground and he walked in .

Frank brought this little Fulmar to us last Friday after he spotted him from his boat near Skellig Michael , what drew his attention was a number of Gulls circling and screaming, this fella couldn’t get out of the water .

He didn’t have any obvious injuries but his feathers were covered in something unknown to us , Rosie washed him a few times each day and he is almost as good as new .

It’s always very important not to stress birds when handling them but a little bit more important with Fulmars , they can protect themselves by projectile vomiting a foul smelling stomach oil with great accuracy up to 7 feet away , maybe he upset his girlfriend and she spat at him , from a very young age I learnt to handle birds with their head facing me , it’s easier to see if they are comfortable or not but more importantly their Pooh is going away from me , it wasn’t a difficult decision to change a lifetime habit and hold the Fulmar facing away from me , I always choose Pooh over vomit .

A little update on the little Kittiwake, We have been monitoring her with Wildlife Cameras to find out why she isn’t water proof, she is bathing daily in sea water and doing a lot of preening but we haven’t seen her use her preen gland , its a small gland at the base of a birds tail and when they squeeze it a few droplets of oil are released and they preen this into their feathers , cleaning them and waterproofing them , we have never seen a bird before who didn’t use their preen gland so it’s a new one for us, were hoping her instincts will kick in and she will realize what it’s for.

It looks like the colony of Kittiwakes are gone out to sea now and this little one has little or no chance on her own so we decided to try and get her through the winter which was going to be very challenging because we were finding it difficult to get her to eat for herself, they don’t usually recognize still fish as food so Rosie has been hand feeding her which is stressful on both of them , we have tried throwing the fish into the water but she was so wary of us she didn’t take much notice of the splash but we had a huge break through today when Emily called to help us out , Emily was outside humming a little ditty while she was brushing Harleys teeth , next thing she broke into a rendition of Queen of the Night by Mozart , when she hit the high notes the water started to vibrate, the Kittiwake thought to himself , proper food at last .

We received a call last about a Buzzard grounded in Newcastlewest , Lauren very kindly volunteered her mum Helen and her sister Becky , Rosie gave them a quick guide on how to catch a Buzzard and off they went .

The Buzzard couldn’t take off but could run and with Lauren chasing her she ran through a ditch and Lauren, distracted by trying to do a good deed followed, and had thorns and scratches all over for her dedication but the fun didn’t stop there , the Buzzard made her way down a very steep slope and with no regard for her own safety or her brand new snow white runners Lauren followed her, disapearring into a field of nettles. Lauren came out battered and bruised but with a female Buzzard wrapped in a towel .

The Buzzard has absolutely no injuries unless starvation is classified as an injury, she was on her last legs , weighing less than a pound, half her normal weight. It is something we see with juveniles every year , they usually struggle to find food once they are dependent from the parents but this lady is probably 3 years old and the only reason we can think of her struggling for food is because there wasn’t any food there , Buzzards are very versatile and can usually manage by grubbing when prey isn’t available but with the ground being so hard she probably struggled to forage also , another possibility is she might have had a head trauma and was concussed for a few days , by time she recovered she could have lost her reserve of body fat and not be able to hunt , even if she stumbled across a family of Rats sunbathing.

The golden rule is to get patients out as soon as possible but asap varies so much , she was in intensive care with Rosie for the last week , initially being tube fed , then hand fed small portions of lean meat , today is the first time she ate for herself and tomorrow she is going into an aviary, her moult is very hit and miss with no real rhythm to it, this can be due to lean pickings, in times where there is a short supply of food the moult can stop, but usually when they get a good supply of food it encourages the moult to really kick in and we think she will start moulting very heavily and she will probably stay with us until she finishes her moult . She can then go home with a brand new set of feathers, we think as soon as possible could be around two months and then it depends on the weather .

I was repairing a roof on one of the sheds a few days ago , aka hiding from Rosie and this little fella turned up , I was wondering if he was one out of probably twenty that Rosie reared this year , I soon found out when he said hand over the meal worms or I’ll tell Rosie what your at .

This little Kingfisher was found grounded in Ul a couple of weeks ago , thanks Helen and Becky for dropping him out to us .

You can’t do a whole lot for small bird when they are concussed except keeping them warm in a dark quiet place and hope they will recover, this guy did recover about 60% which isn’t good enough to be realeased so he stayed with us a little longer than usual, it takes these guys awhile to recognise dead food as food but being so little they haven’t the luxury of waiting awhile so Rosie hand fed him while he was with us , as he got stronger he got more difficult to feed , we were thinking of releasing her locally but we decided to take her back where she was found .

We didn’t even make an effort to take a video because we were fairly sure we would miss her , we released House Martens , Swallows and Swifts last month and didn’t get 3 seconds of useful video and missed the release ourselves so this time we didn’t bother trying, said f**k ye and enjoy it ourselves. We’re going through a bad run lately and losing a few and we just needed a reminder of why we do this but having said that we just got a few flashes of him going but enough to restore a bit of magic.
