COPE Galway Reacts to Budget 2027 Announcements
đź’ Housing: No dedicated funding announced for the long-promised Child and Family Homelessness Action Plan; investment in housing is welcome.
💠Family homelessness: With 250 children and their families currently homeless in Galway, we need more than “business as usual” to tackle this crisis.
💠Cost of living: The €10 increase in weekly social welfare rates and €5 increase in Fuel Allowance won’t go far enough for many people facing rising living costs.
đź’ COPE Galway services: We'll be looking more closely at the detail of Budget 2027 as it becomes available over the coming days to better understand what they mean for those we work with and support.

For children and young people living in emergency accommodation, opportunities to enjoy a day out or take part in a social or sporting activity are much needed but rarely possible.

These experiences are about much more than a day out. For families in our service, these activities offer a break from the challenges of homelessness, provide time for families to spend time together and help children participate in childhood experiences that are vital to their development.

Thanks to the RTÉ Toy Show Appeal and support from our community and local businesses, 99 families and 229 children got to explore, connect and make memories this year.

As Budget 2027 approaches, COPE Galway is calling for targeted investment across the communities we support, including:
➡️Action to prevent family homelessness – including funding the Child and Family Homelessness Action Plan and helping families move out of emergency accommodation as quickly as possible.
➡️Safer routes out of domestic abuse – with changes to help women and children leave abusive situations safely and move towards secure, independent lives.
➡️Support for older people – including investment that helps people age well, stay connected and remain part of their communities.
In our submission, we’re calling for a Budget that protects people from homelessness, poverty, domestic abuse and isolation – and invests in the supports that can prevent these challenges becoming crises.

Meet Joe Mc Govern, one of our COPE Galway Positive Ageing Local Heroes!
Joe is a much-valued member of the Meals4Health team, where he volunteers daily as a kitchen assistant. His warmth, curiosity and willingness to help make him a familiar and much-loved presence among the team.
Joe’s commitment to sport saw him proudly represent Ireland in handball in 1984, an achievement that reflects his discipline, determination and love of staying active. Joe enjoys walking the 3 kilometres to and from Community Catering each day, regardless of the weather.
Community service has always been important to Joe, who also volunteers in South Africa with the Don Bosco Youth Centre.
Thank you, Joe, for showing us how generosity, purpose and connection enrich life at every age.

This Positive Ageing Week, we're proud to celebrate Eamon Mac GiobĂşin, a COPE Galway volunteer and one of Galway's 26 Positive Ageing Local Heroes.
What happens when retirement gives you the time to finally pursue a dream? For Eamon, it opened the door to a new chapter of learning, eventually leading him to study for a BA.
Since then, volunteering with Meals4Health, a social enterprise of COPE Galway by delivering meals to older people across the city has given Eamon another way to stay connected and support others.
For Eamon, meeting people and staying involved is what keeps him going and he stays active through weekly parkrun and Galway City Harriers' Fit for Life programme.
Eamon's story shows that learning, purpose and connection have no age limit.

Meet Peter Queeney, one of our COPE Galway Positive Ageing Local Heroes!

Retirement hasn’t meant slowing down for Peter. It's been a chance to discover new ways to stay connected and curious. From volunteering with COPE Galway and the Samaritans to his years with Oughterard Golf Club, giving back has always been part of Peter’s life. More recently, he’s discovered a talent for painting, capturing Galway’s landscapes and landmarks – proving you’re never too old to try something new!

Between golf, walks along the prom, family, friends and trips to see his grandchildren in Dubai, there’s certainly no shortage of things keeping Peter busy!

Today we're delighted to be part of a flagship Positive Ageing Local Heroes event, honouring 26 remarkable people from across Galway city and county.
Each hero shows what positive, healthy and active ageing looks like in everyday life, and the difference their contribution makes to the people and communities around them.
We're especially proud to celebrate three of our amazing volunteers; Peter Queeney, Joe McGovern and Eamon Mac GiobĂşin, volunteers with Meals4Health, a social enterprise of COPE Galway.
We'll be sharing Peter, Joe and Eamon's positive aging stories with you throughout the week. Keep an eye out!

Positive Ageing Week starts today! 🎉 And we're celebrating the older people across Galway who keep our communities connected, active and vibrant. 💙
This year's theme, 'Connecting Generations', is brought to life by 26 Positive Ageing Local Heroes from across Galway city and county. They volunteer, care for loved ones, run family businesses, stay active and remain at the heart of community life.
As Louise McLaughlin, Head of COPE Galway's Senior Support Service, says: "Each of their stories shows that a life full of purpose and connection can be lived at any age."
