RNLI, Galway Lifeboat Station The RNLI Lifeboat Station at Galway was established in 1995 because of the increasing number of search and rescue incidents in the area.

Today the station operates an inshore B class Atlantic 85 lifeboat. At the Executive Committee Meeting held on 23 March 1994, it was resolved that an Atlantic Inshore lifeboat be established at Galway City because of the increasing number of search and rescue incidents in the area. Galway City is located on the north side of Galway Bay at the confluence of Lough Corrib with Galway Bay.
1996
Altantic 21 class lifeboat placed on temporary station duty at Galway on 27 March. Temporary accommodation for the lifeboat and crew was provided. A new launching davit was also installed on the quay at this time. Following successful completion of the evaluation period, it was agreed that permanent facilities should be provided. Proposals were therefore drawn up for the construction of a new boathouse over the revetment adjacent to the launching davit. These proposals were subsequently approved and work commenced in February 1997 and completed in September 1997. New Atlantic 75 lifeboat B738 placed on service on 3 September.

🌬️ If you can see it, hear it or feel it, it's too windy to paddle.

Many paddleboarders get caught out by offshore winds because the water can appear calm and inviting. But looks can be deceiving.

A Force 4 wind (20 km/h or 13 mph) can push a paddleboarder around one mile offshore in just 30 minutes.

That's why we encourage:

🚪 Force 4 or more, close the door. Or simply remember: 🍀 13 mph = unlucky for paddleboarding ✅ 20 km/h = plenty of wind to stay ashore

Before heading out, check the forecast, look around and ask:
💨 Dust or rubbish blowing?
🌳 Small branches moving?
🌊 White horses forming?
👂 Wind gusts easy to hear?
👕 Wind moving your clothing or board?

If the answer is yes, think twice before launching.
🏄‍♂️ The safest paddle is the one where you return safely.
