Blessed Gerard - Founder of the Order of Malta
Tuesday, 13 October 2026

Today we honour the life and work of Blessed Gerard, the Founder of the Order of Malta, the ancient religious Order which, to this day, carries out Christian charitable works in 130 countries worldwide.

In Ireland the Order commits itself to prayer and good works through its many members and thousands of volunteers. It operates a voluntary Ambulance Corps, has workshops and holiday homes for those with differing abilities, responds to the needs of the homeless and injured in Dublin through a 'Knight Run' in the city, among many other charitable works.

We give thanks to all those who serve Our Lords the Poor and Our Lords the Sick under the eight-pointed Cross (which represents the Gospel Beatitudes) and implore the intercession of Blessed Gerard, and all the Saints and Blesseds of the Order, as the good works continue.

🙏

O God, who raised up Blessed Gerard
because of his wondrous care
for the poor and the sick,
and through him founded
the Order of Saint John in Jerusalem,
grant, we pray, that, following his example, we may always see the image of your Son in our brothers and sisters. Through our Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity if the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

It is lovely to have a full church for Mass every Sunday - soldiers, recruits, veterans, families, locals, and often visitors too. The young and the old, gathered together in prayer and praise.

Saint Paul reminded us today that, whatever our situation in life, there is nothing we cannot master with the help of the One who gives us strength. Thanks be to God.

🙏

A reading from Saint Paul's Letter to the Philippians (4:12-14,19-20)

I know how to be poor and I know how to be rich too. I have been through my initiation and now I am ready for anything anywhere: full stomach or empty stomach, poverty or plenty. There is nothing I cannot master with the help of the One who gives me strength. All the same, it was good of you to share with me in my hardships. In return my God will fulfil all your needs, in Christ Jesus, as lavishly as only God can. Glory to God, our Father, for ever and ever. Amen.

On October 7, the Roman Catholic Church celebrates the yearly feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Known for several centuries by the alternate title of “Our Lady of Victory,” the feast day takes place in honor of a 16th century naval victory which secured Europe against Turkish invasion. Pope St. Pius V attributed the victory to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was invoked on the day of the battle through a campaign to pray the Rosary throughout Europe.

Today, Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary is invoked as Patroness of Óglaigh na hÉireann. Please pray for all members of the Irish Defence Forces, especially those whonate sick or onjured, and those currently serving on overseas missions.

🙏🏻

Pour forth, we beseech you, O Lord,
your grace into our hearts,
that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ your Son
was made known by the message of an Angel,
may, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
by his Passion and Cross
be brought to the glory of his Resurrection.
Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.

Memorial of Saint Faustina
Monday, 05 October 2026

Today we commemorate the memorial of St Faustina who helped us to understand the Divine Mercy of God. May God show mercy to all who have died in wars and violent conflicts, and give strength, courage and protection to all who are working for peace in our world, especially our personnel in the Middle East at present.

🙏

O God, who in a wondrous manner revealed the inexhaustible riches of your mercy
in Saint Maria Faustina,
grant, we beseech you,
that by looking with trust upon
the pierced side of your Son
we may be strengthened to show mercy
one to another and, at length,
sing forever of your mercy in heaven.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

Today is the feast of St Francis of Assisi, the soldier who became the man of peace. In fact, this year is the 800th anniversary of his death in 1226. May we all be inspired by his conversion and his life, and may all who follow the Franciscan way of life be encouraged and fulfilled in their vocations.

🙏🏻

St Francis of Assisi (1181 - 1226)

Francis was the son of a prosperous cloth merchant in Assisi. When his father objected to having his goods sold without his consent to pay for the restoration of a church, the bishop commanded Francis to repay the money. He did. He also renounced his father and gave back everything he had ever been given, even his garments. He began a life of perfect evangelical poverty, living by begging and even then only accepting the worst food that people had to give. He preached to all the love of God and the love of the created world; because, having renounced everything, he celebrated everything he received, or saw, or heard, as a gift. A rich man sold everything and joined him in living next to a l***r colony; a canon from a neighbouring church gave up his position and joined them also. They looked into the Gospel and saw the story of the rich young man whom Jesus told to sell everything; they saw Jesus telling his disciples to take nothing with them on their journey; they saw Jesus saying that his followers must also carry his cross. And on that basis they founded an order. Francis went to Rome himself and persuaded the Pope to sanction it, though it must have seemed at once impractical and subversive, to set thousands of holy men wandering penniless round the towns and villages of Europe.

Because Francis was wearing an old brown garment begged from a peasant, tied round the middle with string, that became the Franciscan habit. Ten years later 5,000 men were wearing it; a hundred years later Dante was buried in it because it was more glorious than cloth of gold.

There is too much to say about Francis to fit here. He tried to convert the Muslims, or at least to attain martyrdom in doing so. He started the practice of setting up a crib in church to celebrate the Nativity.

Francis died in 1226, having started a revolution. The Franciscans endure to this day.
