⛳ The countdown is officially on!

Today marks the beginning of Limerick’s 2027 Ryder Cup Year to Go Celebration, running from Sunday, 4th to Thursday, 8th October, as we look ahead to welcoming the world to Adare next year.

Why Limerick?

A city rich in history, culture and character, Limerick is home to medieval landmarks, Georgian architecture, vibrant music, a thriving food scene and a proud sporting tradition.

From the River Shannon to the Wild Atlantic Way, County Limerick offers a genuine Irish welcome, with the beautiful village of Adare set to take centre stage for one of the world’s greatest sporting events in 2027.

Limerick is lived, not performed💚

We are delighted to share the recent acquisition of a very special piece of Sheridan family history — the Sheridan Family Haydock Bible, which offers a fascinating personal connection to the life of Joe Sheridan, the creator of Irish Coffee.

The Haydock Bible is a beautifully illustrated edition of the Douay-Rheims Catholic Bible, featuring an illustrated Bible dictionary and a history of the books of Holy Scripture.

This particular edition reproduces the 1859 work of Father George Leo Haydock, renowned for its detailed explanations and commentary.

However, it is the personal family history contained within its pages that makes this acquisition particularly meaningful to our museum.

Among the handwritten family records, we discovered the birth of Joseph Alphonso Sheridan in 1909, recorded on the family tree page. Joe Sheridan would go on to make history in Foynes when, in 1943, he created the now world-famous Irish Coffee, a drink that continues to bring a taste of Irish hospitality to people around the world.

Even more special is the discovery of a family photograph tucked inside the Bible, showing Joe Sheridan as a young boy — a remarkable glimpse into his early life and family.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Maren and Helga at Oxfam on Parliament Street, Dublin, for bringing this wonderful historical item to our attention and helping it find its way into our collection.

The Bible will now undergo restoration before being carefully preserved and put on display at Foynes Museum, allowing visitors to discover another personal chapter in the story of the man behind Irish Coffee.

From a handwritten birth record to a childhood photograph, this treasured family Bible helps us connect the internationally celebrated story of Irish Coffee with the family and community roots of its creator.

A truly special addition to our archives. ❤️

A Pan Am Boeing 314 called the Dixie Clipper became the first aircraft to carry a sitting US President when it flew Franklin D. Roosevelt to the Casablanca Conference in 1943. Because it was the first official flight for a president, it is technically considered the true predecessor to Air Force One.
