A new educational resource has been launched by the Irish Community Archive Network (iCAN) in collaboration with The Heritage Council to support Junior Cycle students researching the history and heritage of their local area. The guide is designed to help students undertaking The Past in My Place strand of Junior Cycle History Classroom-Based Assessment 1 (CBA1).

The free resource provides practical, step-by-step guidance on choosing a research topic, conducting local and family history research, carrying out oral history interviews, accessing historical records and presenting findings in an engaging way. Available in both English and Irish, it aims to inspire students to become active historians by uncovering the people, places and stories that have shaped their communities.

Developed from historian Tomás Mac Conmara's acclaimed local history guide and adapted for the classroom by Dr Eoin Ó Donnchadha of The Heritage Council, the publication supports both students and teachers in making meaningful connections between classroom learning and Ireland's rich local heritage.

We regret to advise visitors that the planned Halloween events at the National Museum of Ireland, Turlough Park, have been reduced this year due to ongoing industrial action. Unfortunately, some of our popular seasonal activities will not take place this year, including the Halloween storytelling tours and both the indoor and outdoor Halloween trails.

However, we are open throughout the Midterm holidays and admission, as always, is free. We welcome everyone to enjoy a family day out this Midterm with our award-winning exhibition galleries, autumn walks in the beautiful gardens of Turlough Park, the woodland playground, the Greenway cycle route, the café in the courtyard and the gift shop.

We also have some limited places available on our bookable Halloween-themed arts and crafts workshops. Details are available on our website, and places are free. However, booking is essential.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

For details of what's on at the National Museum in Turlough Park this autumn, please check https://www.museum.ie/en-IE/Museums/Country-Life/Visitor-Information/Autumn-at-the-Museum
