🧠 World Mental Health Day | 10 October

Mental health is an important part of people’s lives and working conditions. But how do mental health outcomes differ across vulnerability groups?

Eurofound data for the EU-27 in 2024 highlights differences in predicted shares of people experiencing anxiety, sleeping difficulties, physical exhaustion and risk of depression, as well as work-related stress and emotional drain.

The findings reveal that these patterns are not always straightforward. Mental health outcomes vary across vulnerability groups and gender, underlining the importance of understanding people’s different experiences of work and life.

📣 Just published: Minimum wages on the rise: Effects and policy lessons from a decade of change

The approach of EU governments towards minimum wages started to change from the turn of the century and national minimum wages have risen sharply, particularly since the mid-2010s, becoming more binding and shaping wage dynamics more broadly.

Drawing on our recent research, this policy brief by Carlos Vacas Soriano examines how national minimum wage increases may affect employees’ pay levels, wage inequality, collective bargaining and the wider employment structure.

💼 What is flexible working doing to our working lives?

This was the central question at today's Brussels Briefing, where Eurofound expert Oscar Vargas provided an inside look at the latest evidence on how flexible working is reshaping working time across Europe.

Drawing on recent Eurofound research, the discussion explored the impact of flexible working on job quality, work-life balance, wellbeing and productivity, while examining how policymakers and employers can ensure that flexibility benefits both workers and organisations.

🤝 Thank you to all participants for an insightful exchange of views.

📣 Just published: Who benefits from AI depends on how it is governed

Technological breakthroughs do not automatically deliver shared prosperity. As AI transforms our economies and societies, the institutions we build today will help determine whether its gains are widely shared.

📣 Just published: Beyond 1.5°C: Putting people at the heart of policy

Global temperatures are set to exceed the 1.5°C threshold within the next few years, but warming can still be limited and reversed. To make this happen, policymakers need to focus on more human-centred policy design.

✍️ In our latest blog post, Eurofound expert Marianna Baggio outlines a practical "to-do list" for policymakers, highlighting how green behavioural public policy can help support sustainable choices and deliver better outcomes for citizens.

📣 Just published: Low-paid jobs: Employment trends and impact of minimum wage policies

Low-paid jobs in Europe are heavily concentrated in a limited number of sectors and occupations.

They are particularly prevalent in:
🔹accommodation and food services,
🔹 administrative and support services,
🔹wholesale and retail trade,
🔹human health and social work.

Especially among low-skilled occupations such as cleaners and helpers, labourers, personal service workers, food preparation assistants and sales workers.
