It's been a busy week for our volunteers with training, Dublin Horse Show & Tallaght Stadium duties.

The Horse Show is one of the main AFS duties on our calender with Belgard volunteers providing our class B appliance as well as crew for every day of the event. 🐎

In addition some volunteers from the Horse Show then on Friday went straight to Tallaght Stadium to provide fire cover & our new recruits got to attend as their first official duty. Soccer

Last night then was back to training with more work on hose drills & basic firefighting 🚒

New recruits have finally joined the class after their induction period in HQ. This induction gets potential recruits garda vetted, manual handing & CFR qualified as well as learning a little of how Civil Defence operates.
🚒Now though it's time to get training!

While the rest of our class is on summer break it gives the new recruits time to get up to speed on skills they will need to be AFS members. These include equipment familiarisation, hose management, basic firefighting, teamwork, communication, chain of command & more.

This intense 4 week training program will allow the new recruits to integrate with class more seamlessly than if they arrived in middle of normal training cycle.
The training is also opportunity for potential Assistant Leaders to develop & show their own competencies in more senior roles. Overseen by class officers & senior roles we hope to develop these volunteers to become Asst Ldrs in the near future & continue their work with the recruits as both groups develop.

Watch out for more updates on the recruits & more recruitment campaigns.

AFS units aren't just a fire related service. Our volunteers also train in search & medical skills. This week as well as working on footwork/marching they also undertook casualty extraction scenarios.

These scenarios incorporated scene safety, initial assessments, stabilisation, extraction & treatment. As always we threw some complications so that could evaluate how they troubleshoot & adapt.

If you think these skills are something you would be interested in then watch our page for recruitment information.

Unit members got some good training in this week. Down the Furry Glen on Monday you would have seen them relaying up & down the hill for pump drills & casualty extractions.

These sort of exercises ensure physical fitness of volunteers & teamwork. As always in Civil Defence there is the need to be able to adapt within drills & troubleshoot problems.

As we continue to take advantage of the good weather volunteers will be doing more exercises like this to improve skills & fitness 💪
