We have had a lot of fun participating in Insect Week this year! From welcoming St Laurence O’Toole’s third class to campus to explore insects, to enjoying the art of Ruth Power depicting butterflies from vintage cigarette cards, to hunting for bugs with our colleagues and learning more about insect research on campus.

As VP for Biodiversity and Climate Action Jane Stout says “Insects are the most diverse and underrated group of animals on earth - they have been around since before dinosaurs, inhabit virtually every corner of Earth and have an incredible variety of body forms and ways of living. They pollinate our crops, recycle our waste and keep our soils healthy. They are worth millions to our economies, and failure to manage them presents huge economic and health risks. We hope you join us in learning a bit about these fascinating creatures and take a peek into their worlds and why they are so important to ours”

For Insect Week 2026 we are welcoming Ruth Power of to campus to showcase her work called An Accidental Archive: Butterflies, nostalgia and shifting baselines. This artwork is in the Arts Building concourse until Thursday. Head over and see it in person!
