Errigal Post Office is closed for the next few weeks, and customers are being directed to Crumlin — but what about our older and less mobile community in Drimnagh?

For many elderly residents, collecting their pension isn’t something that can simply be moved to another location. Getting to Crumlin can be difficult, particularly for those with mobility issues, limited access to transport, or who rely on family and neighbours for assistance.
These are people who should not be left struggling to access their own money because their local Post Office has temporarily closed.

Our older residents deserve better.
There needs to be a practical and accessible alternative for the people of Drimnagh who cannot easily travel to Crumlin.
What arrangements are being put in place to support them during this closure?

Drimnagh shouldn’t be forgotten.

Long before there was any welfare state, the sick and the poor of Irish America were nursed and schooled by an army of Irish nuns in black habits.

The Sisters of Mercy, founded in Dublin by Catherine McAuley, reached America in 1843 when Frances Warde brought a small group to Pittsburgh. Within decades they had built hospitals, orphanages, and schools across the country, tending cholera victims and Civil War wounded alike. For countless immigrant families, a Mercy sister was the first teacher, the first nurse, and the first hand of help they ever met in the New World. 🙏🏥

Was there a religious order or a parish school that shaped your own family's early years in America?

☀️ HOT WEATHER WARNING – PLEASE LOOK OUT FOR OUR OLDER COMMUNITY ☀️

With a period of very hot weather and a Yellow Weather Warning for high temperatures in place, we are asking everyone to take extra care and check in on older relatives, friends, neighbours and those who may be vulnerable.
High temperatures can have a serious impact on older people and can quickly lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

💧 Encourage regular fluids – drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty.

🌡️ Watch for signs of heat exhaustion:
• Heavy sweating
• Dizziness or light-headedness
• Headache
• Weakness or fatigue
• Nausea or vomiting
• Muscle cramps
• Fast heartbeat
• Cool, pale or clammy skin

🚨 Heatstroke is a medical emergency. Call 999 immediately if someone has:
• A very high body temperature
• Hot, red, dry skin or excessive sweating that suddenly stops
• Confusion, agitation or unusual behaviour
• Loss of consciousness or a seizure
☀️ Stay safe by:
• Drinking plenty of fluids
• Staying in cool, shaded areas
• Wearing light, loose-fitting clothing
• Avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day (11am–4pm)
• Keeping curtains closed and using fans where possible
🤝 A quick phone call, message or visit could make all the difference. Together, let's help keep our community safe during this hot spell.
