Today on World & EU Day Against Death Penalty Belgium reiterates its commitment to the total abolition of the death penalty. It is easy to consider those sentenced to death as irredeemable or inhuman, but we must remember that they are people, not abstractions. Recalling the humanity of those sentenced does not deny the harm caused by violent offences, nor does it diminish the pain of victims and their families. Instead, it recognises that the death penalty impacts multiple lives simultaneously. Belgium will continue to work with the UN and the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty for a future without the death penalty.

But did you know that there are nearly 30 sign languages being used in the EU? And that within each language there can be regional differences? Signers might use different signs, expressions or styles while still using the same sign language - all contributing to the richness of the language!

FR👉 Aujourd'hui, nous célébrons la Journée européenne des langues!
Saviez-vous qu'il existe près de 30 langues des signes différentes dans l'UE? Et que chaque langue des signes peut varier d'une région à l'autre? Les personnes signant/es peuvent utiliser des signes, des expressions ou des styles différents tout en pratiquant la même langue des signes - enrichissisant la langue au passage!

Maar wist je dat er in de Europese Unie bijna 30 verschillende gebarentalen worden gebruikt? En dat er binnen elke gebarentaal regionale verschillen kunnen bestaan?
Gebruikers van gebarentalen kunnen verschillende gebaren, uitdrukkingen of stijlen gebruiken, terwijl ze toch dezelfde gebarentaal spreken. Al deze variaties dragen bij aan de rijkdom en diversiteit van de taal!

Aber wusstest du, dass in der Europäischen Union fast 30 verschiedene Gebärdensprachen verwendet werden? Und dass es innerhalb jeder Gebärdensprache regionale Unterschiede geben kann?
Nutzerinnen und Nutzer von Gebärdensprachen können unterschiedliche Gebärden, Ausdrucksweisen oder Stile verwenden und dennoch dieselbe Gebärdensprache nutzen. All diese Variationen tragen zum Reichtum und zur Vielfalt der Sprache bei!
