Celebrating all things German this week!

As part of German Week (12-16 October), the Goethe-Institut Irland was delighted to visit St. Philip’s Senior National School, where we delivered German taster classes to five 5th and 6th class groups.

The school is preparing for the gradual introduction of modern foreign languages as part of the redeveloped primary curriculum. This provided a great opportunity for the Goethe-Institut Irland to offer short 30-minute taster sessions, giving students their first experience with the German language.

During the classes, students learned how to introduce themselves, say where they come from, and discovered that they already knew a lot more German words than they expected. They were also surprised to find out just how similar English and German are.

Throughout German Week, the Goethe-Institut Irland is bringing German language and culture to primary schools across Ireland, while also welcoming secondary school students to our institute on Merrion Square for a range of exciting activities.

Don’t forget to join our German Week Challenges and share your German Week activities on social media using . Fantastic prizes are waiting for the winners!

Welcome to Slanguage School: This week's word: 'Jein'

Sometimes a simple „ja" or "nein" just doesn't cut it.
That's where „jein" comes in: a combination of "ja" (yes) and "nein" (no). We use „jein" when the answer is more complicated or when you're still undecided yourself.

Example:
A: Are you coming to the party tonight?
B: Jein. I have to work tomorrow, but maybe I'll come later.

Or:

A: Do you like working from home?
B: Jein. Ich like it, but sometimes I miss the office.

Would you like to use more German slang words naturally? Join one of our German courses and pick up the language the way it's really spoken.

Kinderkino at Goethe-Institut Irland 2026!

We are delighted to present a series of film screenings at , especially for kids. Each semester, we will screen kids' films in our auditorium, with films for different age groups, alternating. The screenings will take place after our children's courses, 1-3 pm. And we'll take care of the snacks too!

On 24 October, we'll be showing "Der Froschkönig" (for ages 6 and up). On her eighteenth birthday, the princess receives a golden ball left to her by her late mother. Her friends play with it, and the ball falls into the castle pond. The princess is inconsolable, even though a visitor is expected that day. A young man is coming to ask for her hand in marriage—and the future of the impoverished royal family depends on it. However, a frog promises to retrieve the ball from the pond if he is allowed to celebrate her birthday with her.
