Tailte Éireann was delighted to take part in this year's Dublin's Festival of History, hosting a seminar on using the Registry of Deeds Wills collection for Family History yesterday.

The seminar highlighted the ongoing partnership between Tailte Éireann, the Virtual Record Treasury of Ireland, and the Irish Manuscript Commission. We have been working together to link digital images of Registry of Deeds transcript book entries relating to wills to abstracts prepared by genealogist P. Beryl Eustace in the 1950s, and originally published by the Irish Manuscript Commission.

The seminar included speakers Orla McCartney, Tailte Éireann Senior Archivist, Nicola Morris, Accredited Genealogist of Ireland and board member of the IMC and Dr Patrick Walsh, Trinity College Dublin. The event was chaired by the Director of the VRTI, Dr. Ciaran Wallace.

It was great to connect with so many students, answer their questions and share a little more about the diverse career paths available at Tailte Éireann.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our stand.

For Tailte Éireann, is highlighting how our records can provide evidence of historical structures which have now disappeared.

The Registry of Deeds Memorial 58966 was registered on 9 July 1736. It recites Articles of Agreement from 1732 made between Edward Lovett Pearce, engineer and surveyor general and a number of associate of Comedians of City of Dublin to build a playhouse ‘fitted with boxes, seats, gallerys, stage traps and side runner for two setts of scenes and other conveniences’. The Memorial itself is between the widow of Edward Lovett Pearce and several of the subscribers to the Playhouse.

This playhouse became the Aungier St Theatre, and whilst the site is now a supermarket, you can still see remains of the theatre’s stage trap steps mentioned in the Memorial.

For Tailte Éireann is highlighting an interesting discovery in the Registry of Deeds Memorial 206424, dated 5 September 1775.

This Memorial is registering a deed of gift from Thomas Murphy of Waterford City to his cousin Mary O’Neal (nee Murphy) and her daughter Mary. The deed of gift relates to ‘all money, goods, chattels, estate and substance in the Kingdom of Spain which had belonged to Charles Murphy, deceased, who was in the service of his most Catholick Majesty…’ and which Thomas had inherited as next of kin. While not unusual for land in other countries to be occasionally referenced in Registry of Deeds transactions, it is highly unusual for the entirety of the property to be located outside Ireland.
