Explore the latest breakthroughs in dementia and Alzheimer’s research with leading expert Professor Sean Kennelly during Science Week.

Ireland is currently facing a significant public health challenge, with 64,000 people living with dementia. Around 11,000 new cases are diagnosed annually, translating to roughly 30 people every single day. The vast majority of these individuals (63%) live at home within their local communities, supported by a network of over 180,000 family carers. While it is most common in older adults, about 10% of cases are young-onset dementia, affecting people under the age of 65. The landscape of dementia and Alzheimer's research has entered a transformative era, shifting from simply managing symptoms to halting the disease's underlying biology. This event with Professor Sean Kennelly, a leading expert in dementia, will explore this important health issue in an accessible and engaging way. This event will be chaired by Dr Craig Slattery and is presented in association with the University of the Third Age, a global movement that offers lifelong learning and social connection for retired and semi-retired people. It is supported by Research Ireland as part of national Science Week. https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/brain-health-what-science-means-for-the-future-of-dementia-tickets-2001184854771?utm_experiment=test_share_listing&aff=ebdsshios&sg=6a0b959f826896d088f7d098b6b59bf90db6a13a63cdabc00ff4d46ed92044cbafa1806de55eb24191160464ef6d8021a4b268a480105e6c87025512c81eee0c628945ace42afcf5682b3fdd75

Art history expert uncovers new identities, putting names to Renaissance faces

Work by a Trinity College Dublin art historian, Dr Rachel Healy, has led to two Renaissance paintings in major national collections being formally retitled following new research into the identities of their sitters.

Dr Healy work focuses on Renaissance Venice and portraits of the Cornaro family.

Dr Healy's work focuses on Renaissance Venice and portraits of the Cornaro family. One of the central challenges of researching Renaissance portraits is that paintings can survive while the identities of the people depicted are lost. Healy’s research combines close visual analysis with archival research, provenance evidence and comparisons with other portraits to establish the identities of previously unidentified sitters.
