Today marks 61 years since the death of Col James Fitzmaurice, one of the great pioneers of Irish aviation.

On 12 April 1928, Fitzmaurice, then Officer Commanding of the Air Corps, took off from Baldonnel in the Junkers W33 "Bremen" alongside Hermann Köhl and Baron Ehrenfried Günther von Hünefeld. When they landed on Greenly Island, Canada, the following day, the crew had completed the first east to west flight across the Atlantic, putting Baldonnel and Ireland on the world aviation map.

Col Fitzmaurice died on 26 September 1965 and is buried in Glasnevin Cemetery. This afternoon, the Col James Fitzmaurice Commemorative Society and the Fitz100 Centenary Committee gathered at his graveside to lay wreaths and remember his achievements, with a piper's lament and an honour guard salute.

With the centenary of the Bremen flight approaching in April 2028, we look forward to supporting Fitz100 as they mark the occasion. Find out more at fitz100.ie

Congratulations to the members of the 1st Air Corps Potential NCO Course who passed out at Casement Aerodrome today!

Over 19 weeks of demanding training in the Military Training School, Air Corps College, our newest junior leaders proved themselves ready to take up appointments at the rank of Corporal.

A huge thank you to the MTS staff and instructors, the logistics and support elements of the Air Corps College, and the Army No. 1 Band for making today possible. We also thank the families and friends who joined us and have supported these graduates throughout the course.

🛩️ On Friday, the Irish Air Corps was proud to be part of a special day at the Shannon Aviation Museum, as the new Eddie Ryan Wing was officially opened.

The wing honours the late Eddie Ryan, museum founder and former member of the Air Corps, whose lifelong passion for aviation began at Baldonnel more than 70 years ago. It is now home to an Irish Air Corps exhibition, preserving aircraft and artifacts that tell the story of military aviation in Ireland and the generations who served.

Congratulations to Jane Magill and all at the Irish Aviation Foundation on bringing this project to life, and on keeping Eddie's legacy flying for generations to come.
