✨ Meet the team behind the scenes at Farmleigh House! ✨
While the spotlight is on the important events taking place at Farmleigh House during the EU Presidency, there is a dedicated team working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Today, we’re shining a light on two of our valued team members: House Manager Craig and Housekeeper Karen.

Karen has been part of the Farmleigh team for nine years, bringing a wealth of experience, dedication, and care to her role. Craig joined the team three years ago, having previously worked as a gardener at the War Memorial Gardens, and has since become an important part of the team.

Craig works long hours, often late into the night, helping to host important guests and ensuring Farmleigh is presented at its very best. Working in such a high-pressure environment requires flexibility, patience, and attention to detail, but Craig and Karen consistently rise to the challenge.

Despite the stressful situations and long days, they remain professional, polite, and, importantly, always bring a sense of fun to their work.

When asked what they enjoy most about working at Farmleigh, the answer is simple: it’s such a beautiful place to work! 🌿🏛️

We’re delighted to recognise Craig and Karen for their hard work, commitment, and the positive attitude they bring every day. They are a wonderful reminder that behind every successful event is a team of people working hard to make it happen.

👏 Thank you both for being part of the Farmleigh Family!

🐾 And finally, meet two of our favourite visitors, Loughlan and Murlough. Two beautiful Irish Wolfhounds, who never fail to bring smiles and joy to everyone they meet. ❤️🐕

One Europe - Country No 7

DENMARK

Ireland and Denmark may seem like distant neighbours, but their histories have been connected for more than a thousand years.

One of the strongest links dates back to the Viking Age. From the 8th and 9th centuries, Scandinavian Vikings—including Danes—raided, traded and settled in Ireland. Dublin became one of the most important Norse settlements in the British Isles, developing into a major centre of trade and connecting Ireland with Scandinavia, Britain and the wider European world.

The Viking legacy can still be seen in Dublin today, from archaeological discoveries to place names and the city’s rich multicultural history. Over time, Norse settlers and the Gaelic population increasingly intermarried and integrated, creating a fascinating blend of Irish and Scandinavian influences.

Religion also provided an important connection. Both Ireland and Denmark became part of the Christian European world, with Ireland renowned for its monasteries and scholarship and Denmark gradually becoming integrated into Western Christianity.

The sea was another great connector. Irish and Scandinavian sailors, traders and travellers crossed the North Atlantic and Irish Sea, carrying people, goods, stories and ideas.

There are also striking cultural similarities: strong storytelling traditions, folklore, music, mythology and a deep relationship with the sea.

Today, the connection continues through travel, migration, education, business, culture and the European Union.

From Viking ships arriving on Irish shores to modern Dublin and Copenhagen, the story is one of movement, exchange and shared influence.

Meet Oisín – Farmleigh’s electrician, musician, and all-round legend! 🎸⚡

For almost five years, Oisín has been keeping the lights on, the electrics working and the rest of us out of trouble at Farmleigh! 😄

And lately, with all the demands of the EU Presidency, “going home at a reasonable hour” hasn’t always been part of the job description. Oisín can often be found still working away at Farmleigh until 11pm — and somehow, he still manages to greet everyone with that big smile and cheerful nature the next morning!

When we asked Oisín what his favourite thing about working at Farmleigh is, there was no hesitation: the people. ❤️ And it’s fair to say that Oisín himself is a very big part of what makes the place so special.

But there’s more to our electrician than wires and sockets! 🎶 Oisín is also a seriously talented musician and has entertained us at Farmleigh Markets and many other events. So, if you hear music coming from somewhere around the estate, there’s a good chance Oisín is nearby!

Always smiling, always happy to help and always ready with a tune — we’re very lucky to have you, Oisín, as part of the Farmleigh Family.

One Europe - Country No 6
CZECHIA

Ireland and the Czech Republic share surprisingly deep historical and cultural ties despite the geographic distance between them.
For centuries, religious and educational exchanges linked the two regions. Irish clergy, scholars, and soldiers regularly travelled across Central Europe and settled in the historic Czech lands. Meanwhile, Prague flourished as a major hub for European intellectual and cultural life, drawing thinkers from across the continent.

Both nations experienced parallel struggles for self-determination and identity. Following the First World War, this shared pursuit culminated in a historic milestone: Ireland’s intensifying push for independence and the official creation of Czechoslovakia, mirroring a broader European shift toward national sovereignty.

The literary heritage of both nations deeply influenced one another:
Irish icons like James Joyce, W.B. Yeats, and Oscar Wilde gained a passionate following in the Czech lands.
Czech masters including Franz Kafka, Karel Čapek, and Milan Kundera became vital fixtures in Ireland’s cultural landscape.

During the 20th century, Ireland closely watched major turning points in Czech history, such as the Prague Spring. Later, dissident and statesman Václav Havel emerged as a highly respected figure among the Irish public.

Today, this enduring friendship thrives through active tourism, educational exchanges, commerce, and vibrant expatriate communities in both countries.

Meet two members of our wonderful guiding team, John and Emer 🙌
John and Emer are having the pleasure of giving tours to EU delegates, sharing the history, heritage and unique charm of Farmleigh House with visitors from across Europe. What a wonderful way to showcase our heritage and hospitality! 🏡✨
John began his guiding journey at Castletown House and has now been a guide for 5 years. His passion? The men of the Guinness family and the magnificent houses they owned. If walls could talk, John would have plenty of fascinating stories to share! 🏛️📖
Emer has been part of the Farmleigh Family for 9 years and is well known for her engaging talks on the stunning Michael Angelo Hayes painting in the Library. 🎨 You can even catch her talks on YouTube!
More recently, Emer’s passions have blossomed into the great outdoors, with forest bathing and discovering the fascinating world of herbal and medicinal plants. 🌿
Two guides, different passions, and countless stories waiting to be discovered!
