This September, the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Dublin was pleased to share an important new exhibition, entitled House Museums of Language: Identity, Literature and Cultural Memory, with the wider public. Almost 300 guests attended the opening night, part of Dublin's Culture Night, to learn about the commonalities between the lives and work of key historical Slovenian and Irish literary figures, and their impacts on the development of identity, literary history and cultural memory of both nations.
The research project was created and curated by heritology resesearchers from the University of Ljubljana; Matjaž Koman, Lucija Perko, and Rok Humerca, in cooperation with the Žirovnica Institute for Tourism and Culture and ICOM-DEMHIST. Their research focuses on the connections between Slovenian and Irish poets and authors through the physical spaces that keep their legacies alive—the museum houses of their birthplaces and historic homes. The exhibition brings together the work of Matija Čop and Douglas Hyde; France Prešeren and W. B. Yeats; Ivan Cankar and Oscar Wilde; Simon Gregorčič and Seamus Heaney; and Alma M. Karlin and James Joyce. 🖍️ An online introduction to their work is available at: https://visitzirovnica.si/.../house-museums-of-language.../
The exhibition will travel to Roscommon in November, to spark further conversations and reflections on the commonalities between our countries. We look forward to speaking to further visitors about the exhibition there!
