Drones and Hot Air Balloons Do Not Mix

The Irish Aviation Authority is aware of reports of drone activity in the vicinity of hot air balloons during the Irish Hot Air Ballooning Championships at the weekend.

Flying a drone near a hot air balloon is not only dangerous, it may also be illegal.

Hot air balloons have limited manoeuvrability and cannot quickly change course to avoid a drone. A collision could damage the balloon envelope, impact critical equipment, or endanger the pilot and passengers on board. Unlike many other aircraft, balloon operations often take place at lower altitudes where drone flights also occur, increasing the risk of conflict.

If you are operating a drone, remember:
- Never fly near manned aircraft, including hot air balloons.
- You must immediately give way to any manned aircraft.
- Maintain situational awareness and land your drone if a balloon or other aircraft enters the area.
- Check airspace restrictions before every flight.
- Follow all applicable drone regulations.

A drone pilot who endangers an aircraft may be subject to regulatory enforcement action and prosecution.

We are asking all drone users to fly responsibly and to remember that sharing the sky safely is everyone's responsibility.
If you see unsafe drone activity, please report it to the Irish Aviation Authority at https://iaa.ie/dronealert

Irish pilots - EASA, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency have published an interesting article regarding tomorrow's (Weds 12 August) partial solar eclipse, which is due to cross Ireland from approximately 1900-1920. https://www.easa.europa.eu/community/topics/solar-eclipse-2026

GA pilots, Balloonists and those flying Paragliders, Gliders and Handgliders should take note of the potential conditions.

Drone pilots should observe increased situational awareness during this time.
