Today is World Mental Health Day and the theme is 'Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change.'

Our role is to promote, encourage and foster high standards and good practices in mental health service delivery in Ireland.

We do this through the drafting of standards, the regulation of services, and by vindicating the rights of those who have been involuntarily detained in approval mental health centres.

We do this by working with people with lived experience to create standards and practices that will deliver high quality, robust mental health services in Ireland.

Our third and final seminar for people involved in mental health tribunals was held last week in Blanchardstown, County Dublin.

Every detention order for an adult involuntarily detained in an approved mental health centre is reviewed by a Mental Health Tribunal, which vindicates the rights of patients.

A mental health tribunal is made up of a legal member, a consultant psychiatrist, and a lay member.

The Mental Health Commission maintains panels of suitable people who sit on mental health tribunals and, each year, we hold seminars about the tribunals process for people appointed to the panels.

Thank you to all panel members who attended this year's seminars in Cork, Sligo and Dublin.

Pictured are team members from the Mental Health Commission's Mental Health Tribunals and Legal teams.

You may have heard our Chief Executive, John Farrelly, on the radio recently speaking about the National Mental Health Experience Survey.

This is the first ever National Mental Health Experience survey, and we want to hear about your experiences of inpatient mental health care.

If you are eligible to take part, you would have received an invitation by post. If you received an invitation, please complete it by 16 October 2026 by filling out the paper survey or scanning the QR code on your letter to complete it online.

The National Mental Health Experience Survey is a joint initiative of the Department of Health, Mental Health Commission and the Health Service Executive, facilitated by the National Care Experience Programme.

Meabhrúchán - má tá cuireadh faighte agat páirt a ghlacadh sa Suirbhé Náisiúnta ar Eispéireas Meabhairshláinte, comhlánaigh an suirbhé faoin 16 Deireadh Fómhair. Tá d’aiseolas tábhachtach – ba mhaith linn cloisteáil faoi d’eispéireas chun cabhrú le seirbhísí meabhairshláinte ar fud na hÉireann a mhúnlú agus a fheabhsú.

Is comhthionscnamh é an Suirbhé Náisiúnta ar Eispéireas Meabhairshláinte de chuid na Roinne Sláinte, an Choimisiúin Meabhair-Shláinte agus Fheidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte, arna éascú ag an gClár Náisiúnta um Thaithí Chúraim.
