There is power in collective action.

While the work to rule continues, next Wednesday’s public sector strike has been suspended.

The Government has agreed to appoint an independent third party to create a basis for formal negotiations at the WRC.

Unions have said they believe the government wants to reach a public service agreement swiftly.

While this is a first step, it’s a huge win for workers and the unions that represent them.

Now it’s time for the Government to sit at the table and show they’ve heard 300,000 workers loud and clear.

The Social Democrats are delighted to endorse Dr Maeve O’Rourke in the upcoming Seanad by-election.

A champion for human rights, she has been instrumental in fighting for justice for the survivors of mother and baby homes.

Throughout her esteemed career as a barrister, advocate and academic, Dr O’Rourke has been a voice for the voiceless.

We know she will make a remarkable Senator, lending her extensive experience and depth of knowledge to drafting and scrutinising legislation, and ensuring the most vulnerable people in our communities have a strong champion in Seanad Éireann.

In the last year house prices rose by 9% in Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Monaghan and Sligo according to the CSO’s Residential Property Price Index (RPPI).

The Residential Property Price Index outside of Dublin is more than three times higher than in May 2013, a damning indictment of successive Fianna Fáil-Fine Gael Governments and their Housing Ministers.

The national index is now 28.2% above its highest level at the peak of the Celtic Tiger property boom in April 2007.

The national median cost of a home is now €400,000, these prices are out of reach for working families, first-time buyers and anyone who dreams of home ownership in Ireland, many of whom have chosen to emigrate as a result of this hopelessness.

The Social Democrats propose establishing a State construction company that would deliver social and affordable homes at the scale required to address our worsening housing crisis, as well as the creation of four modular homes factories to turbo charge delivery.

We need a seachange in approach to housing.

Hospitals across the country are seeing a serious crisis in staff shortages.

The disconnect between the Minister and the reality on the ground is shocking.

In CUH alone, there is a shortage of 1,000 staff - 172 identified as priority posts for the hospital to operate safely.

Frontline workers are overstretched, and underpaid.

The Minister needs to step up and sort out this staffing crisis.

Sally Rooney's books are beloved by people all over the world, including the UK.

But a law that proscribes Palestine Action – a group supported by Rooney – has forced her publisher to announce that they will no longer release her work in the UK.

This is censorship, plain and simple.

Will the Minister for Foreign Affairs raise this with her UK counterpart?

Our thoughts remain with those who lost their lives in the horrific arson attack that took place in Waterford City this week.

Adequate funding and resources must be provided to tackle drug related intimidation so further losses of life are avoided.

Our justice spokesperson Gary Gannon has been raising the scourge of drug-related intimidation with the Government for years now, yet no substantial action has been taken to put an end to it.

The which claimed the lives of Tadhg Farrell and Mary Holt last year should have been a watershed moment for tackling drug related intimidation, yet the additional €65,000 funding for DRIVE announced last month is nowhere near enough to address the scale of the problem.

The new National Drugs Strategy presented an opportunity to provide badly-needed funding for initiatives to counter drug related intimidation, but the Government chose to keep its head in the sand rather than address this crisis.

Yesterday marked the biggest public sector strike since 2009.

Our representatives were out on the ground all over the country, visiting pickets and speaking to as many striking workers as possible.

Here's what some of them had to say about why they're striking, and what they want to see from negotiations.

After three Gazan students sought a judicial review, the Department of Justice has finally issued visas for them to take up fully funded scholarships in Irish universities.

It should never have taken this level of legal intervention to bring about this result.

The Government must now confirm if any practical arrangements are in place to facilitate the swift evacuation of these students, as they face the further bureaucratic nightmare of Israeli authority checks.

More students are still awaiting the outcome of their appeals, it’s time for the Government to show some humanity.

What an incredible atmosphere yesterday at pickets across the country.

The people are 100% behind the workers.

It’s time for the Government to hear them.

14/10/2026

To the workers - we stand with you. ✊🏼

Ordinary workers up and down the country showed this Government their strength and the support from the greater public was palpable.

Their message was heard loud and clear.

It’s time for a fair deal for our public sector workers.
