Extract from Wilson's Dublin Directory for the Year 1798. Dublin, 1798.

Wilson's Dublin Directory was one of the earliest Trade Directories published in Dublin. Initially consisting of just lists of traders and merchants, by 1798 it included material on the institutions of the city.

This Orphan Houses for Girls and Boys had been founded in 1791 and 1793 respectively and had the avowed aim of bringing up the orphan girls to be "useful Servants" and boys as apprentices.

Did you know? Nearly half a century after his ex*****on, Roger Casement was reburied in Glasnevin Cemetery. Following decades of negotiations between the British and Irish governments, his remains were returned to Ireland from Pentonville Prison, where he had been buried after his ex*****on for high treason in 1916.

On 1 March 1965, Casement was honoured with a full state funeral and military honours. An estimated 30,000 people attended the procession before his final burial in Glasnevin Cemetery.

These images were taken at the funeral procession and show Gardaí marching across the Liffey. These images are from the Stafford Collection.

Do you remember collecting these?

Shoppers once collected stamps with their everyday purchases and carefully filled books like this one in the hope of redeeming them for rewards.

For many, these little green stamps are a nostalgic reminder of weekly shopping trips and saving up for something special.

An Tostal 1956, Programme for Cu Chulainn Pageant

This Pageant of the Death of Cu Chulainn was held in Croke Park and was part of the Tostal celebrations of 1956.

The Tostal was the name of a series of cultural festivals held in Ireland in the 1950s. Regional parades were held and arts and sporting events organized in Dublin as part of the festivities. The emphasis was on local pride and the importance of the Irish tradition.

A sporting goods advertisement from c.1815.

At 36 Lower Sackville Street, Dublin, Martin Kelly assured his customers that his stock was of "superior quality" and available at prices lower than any other house in Ireland. More than 200 years later, the language feels surprisingly familiar.

While today's adverts reach us through social media feeds, sponsored posts, and targeted algorithms, the message has changed very little: quality products, competitive prices, and a promise to stand out from the competition.

This advertisement offers a fascinating glimpse into how businesses marketed themselves in early nineteenth-century Dublin and reminds us that good advertising never goes out of style.
