BA World Languages, UCC: CK110 The BA (World Languages) is a four-year specialist language programme. It aims to produce graduates All placements must be approved by the Board of Studies.

Commencing in September 2014, the BA (World Languages) is a four-year specialist language programme, which includes study abroad and, in most of the languages offered, Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) to complement more traditional teaching. This programme delivered by UCC, where Modern Languages were ranked in the top 100 institutes worldwide (QS World University Rankings by Subject (2013), offers the possibility to study a wide and attractive range of languages: some are offered as Major Subjects, while the number of credits offered in other, complementary languages is limited. While the focus of the programme is on living European and World languages, Latin is also offered for its value as an academic discipline and as the root of several of the other languages available. Most of the languages offered can be taken without having been studied previously, but students of French or Irish must have taken them to Honours level in the Leaving Certificate or equivalent and, in any case, all students must have demonstrated competence in a language other than English. The Third Year of the programme is a structured Year Abroad, involving study at a partner institution or a combination of study at a partner institution and a work placement: students are encouraged to take the initiative in organizing work placements themselves, this being a valuable learning experience in itself, but this will be facilitated by the Board of Studies in collaboration with UCC’s Careers Service.

We are delighted to welcome back one of our graduates.
Laura studied Irish, Italian and German as part of the World Languages Programme and now works as an Intercultural and Language Professional for the European Parliament. She will give a talk at UCC on 5 November about her career progression since graduating, what her profession at the European Parliament involves and how the role of translator has evolved in recent years. She will also explain how the recruitment process works at EU institutions and offer advice to students interested in pursuing a career in translation there. Includes Q&A.

Rinne Laura staidéar ar an nGaeilge, ar an Iodáilis agus ar an nGearmáinis mar chuid den chúrsa ‘Teangacha Domhanda’ agus anois tá sí ag obair mar Ghairmí Teanga agus Idirchultúrtha do Pharlaimint na hEorpa. Míneoidh sí freisin an chaoi a n-oibríonn an próiseas earcaíochta in institiúidí an Aontais Eorpaigh agus tabharfaidh sí comhairle do mhic léinn ar spéis leo tabhairt faoi ghairm san aistriúchán. Beidh seisiún ceisteanna agus freagraí ann tar éis na cainte.

The weather was mostly kind and there as a real buzz on campus for the 2024 UCC Open Day. Lots of interest in World Languages at the programme talks and at the BAWL stand in the Main Restaurant, where we had information on the career paths of some of our graduates.
