A few weeks ago I started a new show on UCC98.3FM The Thursday Mixtape.

The idea for this show is simple. There are no genres, no boundaries and no particular rules - as the opening track of this show goes, it’s all kinds of everything. Every track is chosen purely because I like it and want people to hear it.

The first show is now available on Mixcloud.

Across the two hours of this show I played indie, post-punk, ambient, electronica, ska, alternative rock, French pop and a few other places. Some songs may be familiar to you. Others may be completely new. That’s part of the fun.
Hopefully you’ll discover something you might not otherwise have come across.

It’s long been on my wantlist, and I’ve finally managed to pick up a copy of The Reindeer Age (the much-loved 1990 compilation showcasing the independent music scene in Limerick at the end of the 1980s.)

Recorded between August and November 1989 at Pearse Gilmore’s Xeric Studios on Edward Street, it captures a snapshot of the city’s underground scene, with The Hitchers, Tuesday Blue, They Do It With Mirrors, Private World, Toucandance, The Separators, The Drive, The O’Malleys and more. Xeric was also the studio where some of the early sounds of The Cranberries were shaped.

I had this on cassette back in the day, so there’s something slightly strange (but very enjoyable) about putting the record on more than 30 years later and hearing it again. I’m not sure how much of it is nostalgia and how much is simply that it’s a really good record, but I’m absolutely loving hearing it again after all these years.

Missed last Weeks Takeover show?

My conversation with David Murphy, Data Engineer with UCC’s Enterprise Solutions Group, is now available to stream on Mixcloud. Link in bio.

We talked data, analytics, digital systems, and the cloud-based platforms helping to transform how information is managed and used across UCC.
We also discussed libraries, technology, and the importance of connecting services and data across the university.

Away from the day job, David is also an accomplished and in-demand pedal steel guitarist, so naturally the conversation extended beyond technology and into music. We explored his musical life, the artists and records that have influenced him, and played a selection of tracks chosen by David for the show.

We hope you enjoy

I’m back on air this evening at 6pm with my new show, The Thursday Mixtape.

Every week I’ll be sharing a different collection of music that’s crossed my path over the years. Expect the unexpected, with tracks from across genres, eras and countries sitting side by side. Sometimes there’ll be a theme, sometimes there won’t, but the aim is always the same: two hours of great music and new discoveries. It’s a little bit of all kinds of everything.

Then tomorrow at 11am, Shush! Sounds from UCC Library returns, in its new time slot, for the first show of the new academic year

As is now Shush tradition, the programme features music chosen by colleagues from across UCC Library. Between the songs, I’ll introduce some of the people who help make the Library what it is and share a little about the work they do to support learning, teaching, research, student life and digital innovation across the university.
