No raingear, new boots causing blisters, local hospitality for sustenance, incredible camaraderie along the way and no stopping for 10 days is how John Roche recalls Ireland’s historic march to Dublin for farmers’ rights in 1966. Fifteen farmers from 27 counties (then Tipperary North and South) totalling 405 farmers took part in the march, converging at various points, until their arrival in Dublin on Wednesday 19 October 1966 to be welcomed by supporters numbering about 30,000. Not a single negative incident was reported as far as John Roche can recall. Listowel to the Liffey by John Roche is a snapshot of the 15 who marched from Kerry, following events of the ten days on the road. The four surviving farmers, John Roche, James Brosnan, Padraig Pierce and Tommy Joe English were honoured by the IFA in Listowel last Saturday, the 60th anniversary of the event, and there was also a framed certificate to the families of the deceased members.

Double celebrations at The Island Centre Castleisland today as Castleisland District Heritage marked the recent 90th birthday of Tomo Burke, one of the founders and former treasurer of the Michael O'Donohoe Memorial Heritage Project (now CDH) and the retirement of John Galvin, former committee member, who recently put down his pen after 50 years of writing the Scartaglin notes for The Kerryman. A flow of friends old and new called in, and a few songs and recitals were shared over tea and cake tastily prepared by The Country Market. Congratulations gentlemen, you have, through your time and labour, made an indelible mark on local history.
