The Swiss Cottage Directions from Cahir : From Cahir Castle car park turn right onto Castle Street. Take a right at the top of Castle Street onto the Ardfinnan Road (R670).

Continue 2km and turn right at the brown Swiss Cottage sign. Car park in the woods on the right. A delightful "cottage orné" built in the early 1800s by Richard Butler, 1st Earl of Glengall to a design by the famous Regency architect John Nash. Its interior contains a graceful spiral staircase and some elegantly decorated rooms. The wallpaper in the Salon manufactured by the Dufour factory is one of the first commercially produced Parisian wallpapers. Situated on an elevated site with access by stone steps.

Join us this Sunday, 23rd August, to wrap up National Heritage Week 2026 in style! We are thrilled to welcome talented thatcher Alice Bowler to the gardens of the Swiss Cottage. Alice will be hosting a live Thatching Demonstration, showcasing the rare, time-honoured techniques and skills that have kept Ireland’s historic buildings beautifully preserved for generations.

📍 Where: The Garden at Swiss Cottage, Cahir, Co. Tipperary

⏰ When: Sunday, 23rd August | 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM

🎟️ Admission: Completely FREE! All are welcome.

⚠️ Quick tip for visitors: This is an entirely outdoor event, and there are no food or drink refreshments available on-site at Swiss Cottage, so please plan accordingly!

Step into a fairytale this Heritage Week! Discover the whimsical charm of the Swiss Cottage - Ireland's only surviving Cottage Orné. An 18th century rustic retreat built for Lord and Lady Cahir, where they would enjoy garden parties, picnics and musical evenings.
Free Admission to the site on Saturday 15th August, 10am - 5.15pm.
Access to the interior strictly by guided tour. Tour numbers are limited, tours operate on a first come first serve basis.
