Tonight, we join the Wave of Light, remembering every baby lost during pregnancy, at birth or in infancy.

To every parent, grandparent, sibling and family carrying this grief: thinking of you and the little lives you hold forever in your hearts.

Tonight candles are lit around the world for one hour in remembrance. Whether you light a candle, share a memory or take a quiet moment tonight, there is no single way to remember.

SECTION 17 – STILL NO RESPONSE FROM THE HOUSING MINISTER!

On 21 September, I wrote to the Minister for Housing seeking urgent clarification on when Section 17 of the Defective Concrete Blocks (Amendment) Act 2025, along with the necessary associated provisions, would be commenced.

I am still awaiting a response.

Some of the longest-waiting homeowners in Donegal remain completely stuck in the Defective Concrete Blocks Scheme.

These are families who were awarded remediation options up to 6 years ago, many of whom did not proceed because the options offered were unsuitable for the condition of their homes.

Their homes have continued to deteriorate, yet their applications remain with Donegal County Council, with no clear pathway to have their determinations formally reconsidered.

How much longer are these families expected to wait?

What concerns me most is the impact these delays are having on people's health, safety and wellbeing.

I am hearing from homeowners, including elderly people and those with existing medical conditions, who are living in properties affected by damp, mould, cold and worsening structural damage.

Some are reporting respiratory problems and concerns about how their living conditions are affecting their health. Others are experiencing enormous stress, anxiety and sleepless nights, worrying about whether their homes are safe and whether they will ever get the opportunity to rebuild their lives.

No elderly person should have to spend their retirement living in fear in a deteriorating home. No family should be left worrying about the impact their home is having on their children's health.

And yet, these homeowners remain trapped in a system that is preventing them from moving forward.

I am calling on the Minister to urgently:

🔴 Confirm when Section 17 and the necessary associated provisions will be commenced.

🔴 Clarify how affected homeowners can have their existing determinations reconsidered.

🔴 Ensure Donegal County Council and the Housing Agency are prepared to progress these applications without further delays.

🔴 Provide a clear timeframe and prioritise homeowners whose health or safety is at risk.

These families have already lost years of their lives waiting for a solution. Every additional delay means further deterioration of their homes, further financial hardship and potentially further harm to their physical and mental health.

This is not just about legislation or paperwork. These are people's homes, their health, their safety and their lives.

These homeowners are not asking for special treatment. They are asking for a fair opportunity to have their homes properly reassessed so they can finally move forward.

Minister, these families deserve answers, not more silence.

SECTION 17 MUST BE COMMENCED WITHOUT FURTHER DELAY.

ONE MINUTE. THAT'S ALL WE ASK!

This Friday, 16th October, please join Buncrana Community First Responders and pop by SuperValu Buncrana for World Restart a Heart Day.

We’re asking you to give us just *ONE MINUTE* of your time.

One minute to try CPR on a training aid.
One minute to learn a skill that could one day save the life of someone you love.

One minute might seem like nothing to you, but to someone experiencing a cardiac arrest, it could mean the difference between life and death. It could help give someone years more with their children, their partner, their family and their friends.

Can you spare one minute?
If your about Buncrana on Friday 16th October, just call by for only 60 seconds, try a little CPR on our training aids, pick up a colour sheet for the kids & take one of our stickers home to display in a safe place 🙌

That minute could one day, help give someone a lifetime more minutes ❤️

Come along, meet our responders and give it a quick go.
You never know who or when you might need it!

Behind every public service is a person who makes a difference in someone’s life. ❤️

The nurse who comforts a frightened patient. The SNA who helps a child feel safe and included. The teacher who gives a young person confidence. The council worker out in all weathers, and the staff helping people through difficult days.

Today, I stand with our public service workers taking industrial action.

These are our neighbours, friends and family members. They care for our communities while facing the same worries about paying bills, heating their homes and providing for their families.

Taking strike action is a difficult decision, with workers losing a day’s pay to have their concerns heard. They deserve fair pay, respect and delivery on the commitments made to them.

I know today is difficult for patients, parents and families too. I hope the Government and unions can urgently reach a fair agreement that gives workers the support they deserve and protects the services we all need.

To everyone on the picket lines today: thank you for the work you do, often quietly and without recognition. You are valued, and you have my support. ✊
