Ballycastle - Baile an Chaisil - the town of the stone fortress lies on the beautiful rugged coast of North Mayo. Its northern boundary is exposed to the wild Atlantic ocean, to the west are the lovely Stags of Broadhaven (600 million year old rocks), to the east lies Killala Bay, to the south are the towns of Crossmolina and Ballina. Ballycastle is a small but thriving community which has much to offer visitors. We have a rich history, going back at least 5000 years. Our ancestors left evidence of their way of life at the Céide Fields where an Interpretative Centre has been built. We have long sandy beaches and tall threatening cliffs along the seafront. The cliffs at Céide reach a height of 365 feet and give a panoramic view of horizontal layers of sandstone 350 million years old. Myth, legend, history and folklore all thrive in this ancient place. One can be entertained for hours with stories from the time of our patron saint, St. Patrick, through the darker days of the Penal times, when his followers sought hiding in the bleak bog land and onto more recent anecdotes of fair days and football matches.

Kilmaurs, Scotland and formerly of Ballykinlettra, Ballycastle, Co. Mayo – passed away peacefully, on Sunday 20 September 2026, surrounded by his close family – his wife of 56 years, Pat, his daughters Ashling, Breeda and Siobhan, and his son Noel.

Predeceased by his parents, Michael (Sonny) and Eliza, and his brothers Sean and Michael.

He will be deeply missed by his wife, children and eight adored grandchildren, as well as his siblings, Eddie, Tom, Mary and Gerry, and extended family members.

May James’ Soul Rest in Peace.

He will be received into St. Brigid’s Church in Ballycastle on Wednesday evening, 30th September, for prayers at 7.30pm.

His Requiem Mass will be held on Thursday, 1st October at 12 noon, followed by burial in Ballycastle cemetery.

Well done to the almost 400 Mayo Volunteers who took part in The Big Beach Clean 2026 last weekend.

The annual event aims to protect our county’s towns, villages, coastlines and inland waterways. Thanks to the hardworking volunteers, over two tonnes of waste was successfully removed

There was a great turnout at Ballycastle Beach for a big Cleanup 👌 Thank you for everyone who took part and made a difference. 👏 As a result we can look forward to having permanent litter pickers, rubbish bags and a rubbish collection taking place at the entrance to the beach so keeping our beach clean will be an ongoing event ⛱️ 🌊
