🐒 **5 Reasons Why Long Tailed Macaques Do NOT Make Good Pets**

Long tailed macaques are intelligent, emotional, and highly social wild animals. Yet, many continue to suffer because of the demand for exotic pets. Here’s why they should never be kept as pets.

Monyet ekor panjang adalah satwa liar yang cerdas, memiliki emosi, dan sangat membutuhkan interaksi sosial. Namun, banyak dari mereka masih menderita akibat permintaan pasar terhadap satwa liar sebagai hewan peliharaan. Berikut lima alasan mengapa mereka tidak seharusnya dipelihara.



**1. The Pet Trade Fuels Wildlife Cruelty**

Baby macaques are often taken from their mothers at a young age to be sold as pets. This separation causes immense distress and trauma. The demand for pet macaques continues to encourage wildlife exploitation and the illegal wildlife trade.

**1. Perdagangan Monyet Memicu Kekejaman terhadap Satwa Liar**

Bayi monyet sering kali dipisahkan dari induknya sejak usia dini untuk diperjualbelikan sebagai hewan peliharaan. Pemisahan ini dapat menyebabkan tekanan emosional dan trauma yang mendalam. Permintaan terhadap monyet peliharaan terus mendorong eksploitasi satwa liar dan perdagangan ilegal.

**2. They Suffer Psychologically in Captivity**

Macaques need space to climb, explore, forage, and interact with others. Keeping them chained, caged, or isolated can cause severe stress, fear, and abnormal behaviors, including repetitive movements and self harm. Even a spacious enclosure cannot fully replace their natural environment.

**2. Mereka Mengalami Penderitaan Psikologis dalam Penangkaran**

Monyet membutuhkan ruang untuk memanjat, menjelajah, mencari makan, dan berinteraksi dengan sesamanya. Hidup dalam kandang sempit, dirantai, atau diisolasi dapat menyebabkan stres berat, ketakutan, dan perilaku tidak normal, termasuk gerakan berulang hingga menyakiti diri sendiri. Bahkan kandang yang luas sekalipun tidak dapat sepenuhnya menggantikan habitat alami mereka.

Our team regularly check and maintain the space to help keep it clean, secure, and suitable for their daily care. A healthy and safe environment is part of rehabilitation, and our team is determined to do our best for the animals we treat.

On June 9, for Coral Triangle Day, our students and team came together for a beach clean up to care for the coastline we all share. 🌊🤍

Every piece of rubbish removed is a small act of protection for coral reefs, marine life, and the communities that depend on a healthy ocean. We are proud to learn, take action, and protect our home together.

Sunda pangolins are endangered, which makes every rescue, recovery, and release so important to us.

Jumbo was found by local residents and handed to the Jembrana Police, before being transferred to BKSDA Bali Jembrana Resort. When she arrived at our clinic, our team found an injury around her tail and began her rehabilitation.

After receiving the care and time she needed to heal, Jumbo was released back into the wild, where she belongs. 🐾

A special thank you to Balai Taman Nasional Bali Barat for allowing us to release Jumbo in this protected habitat.

We received a report from the Jembrana Police Water Unit about a stranded whale shark in Pekutatan, Jembrana. Our JSI JAAN Umah Lumba team coordinated with the Denpasar Marine Management Agency to assist with the response, with support from the Jembrana Regency Government and heavy equipment.

During the examination, plastic waste was found in the whale shark’s stomach mixed with digested food. Our medical team is still conducting further checks to determine the cause of death.

On April 18, we celebrated Tumpek Landep, a sacred Balinese Hindu day dedicated to honoring and blessing the tools, machinery, and equipment that support our daily lives. More deeply, it reminds us to sharpen our minds, act wisely, and use these tools for good.

At Umah Lumba, we gave thanks for everything that helps us care for rescued animals and continue our work with compassion. 🙏🌿

Bali issued Governor Circular Letter No. 19 of 2025 urging people not to keep long tailed macaques as pets, alongside provincial wildlife protections.

Meet Sumi, a young long tailed macaque recently received by Umah Lumba.

She arrived with a chain around her waist. During examination, our veterinary team also discovered an air r***e pellet lodged near the same area.

What happened to Sumi is heartbreaking, but sadly she is not an isolated case. Long tailed macaques continue to be kept as pets, chained and deprived of a natural life, even after Bali introduced measures telling people not to keep them as pets.

Wild animals do not belong on chains. Sumi is now safe and receiving the care she needs, but we still hope there would be no more stories like Sumi’s we need to tell anymore🐒💚
