As Indonesia commemorates the National Day of Older People, we’re reflecting on what it truly means to age with dignity.
In Dusun Teguhan, a small aquaponic system designed to support food security for elderly communities became something more: a space where generations gather, help one another, and stay connected through everyday care.

Through this pilot, we learned that food security is not only about access to nutrition, but also about community, participation, and feeling supported while continuing to contribute in meaningful ways.

Q1 2025 wrapped, and we're already looking at what's next. ✨

This week, the Kopernik team gathered for our first quarterly meeting of the year, reflecting on the ground we've covered, the communities we've walked alongside, and the bold possibilities ahead.

One highlight that has us genuinely excited: a new spin-off taking shape from our work in West Timor. 'Haimnahat is exploring what it looks like to transform Timor's food ecosystem from the ground up: connecting local regenerative farmers to modern markets, and building a food future that's both rooted in place and ready for the world.

There's still a long road ahead. But moments like these remind us why the work matters. 🌱

Kopernik’s Solutions Lab has been working with schools and local communities in Palembang (South Sumatra, Indonesia) through the HEAL-HAZE and CANBREATHE projects to strengthen community-level air quality monitoring.

🏫 HEAL-HAZE: Kopernik’s Solutions Lab installed indoor air quality sensors in 20 classrooms and three outdoor sensors across four primary schools in Palembang. The team held sharing sessions with class teachers to introduce the research plan, demonstrate DIY air purifiers, and explain how the sensors work. Interactive posters were distributed to help teachers and students better understand classroom air quality conditions.

🌫️CANBREATHE: Kopernik’s Solutions Lab hosted a community gathering in Kelurahan Talang Bubuk to demonstrate the air quality sensor and DIY air purifier, and to outline the research plan and timeline for the household participants before starting household sensor installations. Sensors have been installed in 17 out of 60 targeted households, with the remaining installations planned for completion in May 2026.

🌧️In April, Palembang continued to experience heavy rainfall, which triggered flooding in several locations within the city. However, the dry season is projected to peak in July and August, heightening the risk of wildfires and severe haze across South Sumatra, including Palembang.
Through these initiatives, Kopernik’s Solutions Lab aim to strengthen community resilience, raise awareness about air quality, and support healthier living environments in Palembang. 🌱
Funded by Wellcome Trust and e-ASIA JRP.

The rapid growth of Indonesia’s organic fertilizer market by 12.7% year-on-year opens up strategic opportunities for the development of seaweed-based fertilizers.

In Patas Village, we are working together with Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha (Undiksha) to tap into this potential by transforming raw seaweed into high-value biostimulants. Early data shows a significant improvement in the growth of tomato and chili crops. We look forward to sharing more as we complete our upcoming experiment iterations to ensure this solution is rigorous and ready for wider impact.

This initiative is supported by UOB Indonesia and BNP Paribas Asset Management through the BNP Paribas IDX30 Filantropi mutual fund.

Last week, our Solutions Lab and Advisory Services team, in collaboration with ReservoAir, hosted a Focus Group Discussion on enabling market ecosystems for urban water conservation financing in Jakarta. The session brought together stakeholders across sectors to tackle one shared challenge: sustainably financing urban water conservation at scale.

From government institutions like Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Public Works, and the Ministry of Forestry, as well as research partners including the Bandung Institute of Technology, World Resources Institute, Indonesian Water Institute, and Indonesian Water Academy, alongside civil society organizations like Kota Kita, Mosaic, Rekonvasi Bhumi, FORDAS, ANGIN, P4W IPB, and Ecoxystem—the discussion reflected a strong collective commitment to addressing urban water challenges from multiple perspectives.

The discussion highlighted how innovative solutions, such as ReservoAir’s Poreblock technology, can help enhance urban water recharge. But technology alone isn’t enough. The group explored how these solutions can be supported by sustainable financing mechanisms and enabling policies—ensuring they are not only effective, but also scalable and accessible.

This initiative is part of the Water Balance Action (WBA) partnership between Kopernik and ReservoAir, funded by P4G.
