🐠 Do artificial reefs really work?

A recent study published in Marine Biology followed fish communities on our restoration site over a five-year period (2020–2024). This work was a collaboration between ourselves, , and our research partners at .

The results show that the hard work of our local communities and international volunteers is paying off 💙

Here’s what we found:

🌊 Artificial reefs quickly attract marine life
Just 1–3 years after deployment, our artificial reefs were already supporting fish communities similar to nearby natural coral reefs.

🐟 Hundreds of species recorded
Over five years we recorded 209 fish species on artificial reefs, compared with 249 species on natural reefs. Nearby degraded sandy areas had very little marine life.

📈 Artificial reefs dramatically increase biodiversity
Artificial reefs supported almost 10× more fish species than degraded habitats.

🦈 Different habitats support different fish
Artificial reefs supported more predatory fish, while natural reefs supported more herbivores and plankton-feeding fish.

⏳ Long-term monitoring matters
Because we monitored these reefs for five years, we could see changes that shorter studies might miss.

Volunteers and local fishermen came together with incredible spirit to build and place artificial coral reefs into the sea. Step by step, we are helping bring life back to the ocean. 🪸🐠🌊

From “I’m scared” to “can we do it again?” 🫧
First-time diving for these local kids in our conservation area, and they absolutely crushed it. This is where fun meets conservation—and where future ocean lovers are made. 🌊🐠

With the turtle nesting season now at its end for the year, we are really pleased to have a chance to review the data collected and share the exciting results from our turtle hatchery. This season, with the help of our volunteers and local staff, we were able to protect and incubate 6200 eggs, from nesting Olive Ridley and Hawksbill sea turtles.

Thanks to the incubation machines donated by the , we managed to achieve a fantastic average hatchling success rate of 91% this season 🎉

We would like to express our gratitude to all our volunteers for their assistance with this exciting project over the past year. We know the early 6am hatchling releases aren’t easy to wake up for, but thanks to everyones hard work, we are pleased to say that this hatching season has been a huge success!

Our 5 year coral reef / artificial reef monitoring program continues! Long-term and consistent data sets on coral reef restoration projects are rare in Indonesia, and increasing our understanding of these systems is vital for their sustained protection.

North Bali Reef Conservation

Ever since there have been people in Tianyar, there have been people fishing in Tianyar. Reef damage and degradation associated with fishing has slowly broken down large areas of otherwise healthy reef, leaving a barren, sandy sea floor where there should be diversity rivalling that in the Amazon Rainforest. An urgent need to protect and conserve the reef was identified and in July 2017 North Bali Reef Conservation was founded by I Ketut De Sujana Mahartana, the founder of Volunteer in Bali Program and Zach Boakes, an undergraduate environmental scientist. Alongside our aim to restore and conserve Tianyar’s coral reef, we also aim to provide an alternative, sustainable livelihood to the local people. North Bali Reef Conservation has since started several environmental and sustainability projects focusing on education, mentality change, no take Marine Protection Area (MPA), pollution reduction, and artificial reef structures.
